Back in Modern. What am I Looking At?

Haven't been around since before Born of the Gods cycled out. What's the top decks to beat?

Next question: Don't want to spend my paycheck on a deck. What do you like for about $100 dollars or so?

Not looking to win FNM parse.

I love anything with Green in it. Simic, Gruul, and Bant are my faves. Outside of budget aggro decks I haven't seen too much that interests me.

Thanks fellow TappedOut guys and gals!

I would check out these articles. It's very difficult to build a GOOD modern deck for under $100 but these will give you a start.

Modern in a nutshell: Tarmogoyf, Liliana of the Veil, Karn Liberated, Inkmoth Nexus

Jokes about overpriced cards aside, unless you wanna play burn, you arent getting anything very good for under $100, though I can link you to some decent decks I designed as experiments. They may give you starting points, since the idea of the project was to make as many Modern decks as possible for $100-ish or less. Though fair warning, they are super budget "intro to Modern" decks from a scrub, so I make no promises about winning games with them

Cue shameless plug

(Project Benjamin) Mono White Soul Sisters

(Project Benjamin) Mono Blue Tron (This WAS $100 when I built it. Prices crept up on me, but still possible for around $100)

(Project Benjamin) Mono Red Burn

(Project Benjamin) Mono Green Infect

(Project Benjamin) Mono Black 8-Rack

Hopefully this at least gives you a starting point :)

For a good snapshot of modern, I like reading Modern Nexus' weekly metagame analysis article. The most recent one can be found here.

As for a budget modern deck, do you have anything to work from or are you starting from scratch? If it's the latter, readerrwo7 has some good suggestions. If you do have something to work from, post it and we can see if it helps make a presently exsisting deck more affordable.

Finally, you could always try to innovate a new deck!

Check out THE Modern Format Primer for an idea of the metagame. Modern Nexus and MTGTop8 are also good resources.

DrFunk27 - Ty for that link! I had a chance to review it and those decks look uber fun. Helped very much.

readerrw07 - Ty for the post. Being that is the nutshell then not too much has changed from what I see! I did hear Eldrazi was running a muck until the bannings. When I have more time I'd like to look at your budget builds. If I get to playtesting them I'll definitely let you know how it goes.

Player3.14 - Thanks for the link. Tonight I'd like to look at this. The only cards I have are current Standard cards and some crappy Pauper commons. Last night I did trade and try to start a G/W token deck. Seemed easy and effective. But looked like something I could spend more money on if wanted. Got some Gavony Township, Sunpetal Grove and Stirring Wildwood. When I do some more playtesting I'd like to post it.

ducttapedeckbox - Hey, great link. I'm definitely going to have to review that one. Thanks!

Yeah, G/W tokens just did pretty well at GP LA a few weeks ago. Matt Nass piloted it to 15th place; his list is here. (you'll have to scroll down a bit). His list is tricked out with expensive cards like Noble Hierarch and extra fetchlands, but substiting for these cards (or in the fetchlands' case, building a different mana base) won't really hurt the deck much. I played decks down fetches for years and had little trouble. It's certainly viable, especially with the G/W lands you already have. Tokens is a great deck to get into modern with!

Alright I've got a half-dozen games in with this:

Back to Modern - Make G/W Tokens

Hope you guys have time to critique it. All suggestions helpful.

Player3.14 - wow, that list is insane. I love it. Ty so much for linking that. Not just cuz it's cool but it shows the potential of this build.
