I know there's the always talked bout thundermaw, the there's stormbreath but is their any other good dragons worth running in modern?Maybe like a badass 6-8 drop that basically spells game?
JexInfinite says... #3
If it costs more than 5, you won't be playing it. Stormbreath Dragon and Thundermaw Hellkite are the only ones worth considering.
Mutavault deserves a mention, too.

Modern isn't really a format looking for a 6-8 CMC to close games since most decks out there have 3-4 CMC win conditions in the first place. Modern is too fast for too high of costs.
Other than that, Thundermaw Hellkite is the only one powerful enough to warrant a little play in Jund lists.

No well I was kinda hoping that their would be type of deck you could have like a one win con dragon duke it out with the rest of the modern meta. I think it be a Kool concept to introduce. I know there was some other dragon that deal 1 damage to all non flying creatures and I'm looking for something in that variety. I know somewhere in magics history you guys have had a dragon that was meta at one point I mean before thundermaw and storm breath... Right?

None of the cards printed in the 'UN' sets are tournament legal. Except for basic lands.
I actually hard cast that dude once. Fun times.

Oh that sucks lol but yeah it looks pretty hard to cast. Make a casual deck bout it.... Sounds pretty Kool.

I found Hellkite Overlord and Utvara Hellkite
Hellkite Overlord sounds pretty good. It regens and is a pretty badass 8 drop with 10 lands up for the regen cost. Also it get a plus. And it has trample which could be used for defesnse. 8/8 big damage to creatures with 4 or lower power.
And as for Utvara Hellkite it has badass stats, it's cmc is pretty reasonable due to the fact that the hard colors are just red. And it produces tokens. Dragon's Tempest could give it haste.
But idk it be Kool if their was more stuff to use dragon flodder with

well modern Dragonstorm with 4 copies of Bogardan Hellkite used to be a thing it's not anymore but it used to. Much like others have said the best dragon currently in modern is Mutavault. Ocassionaly you will see a uwr control deck with a Thundermaw Hellkite but not often. If your looking for a deck that ramps big creatures you might want to try the mono green with a splash of red genesis wave combo deck. It's a rouge tier 2-3 deck. Works well against midrange decks, mixed results against control and aggro decks, and has a harder time against combo decks especially those with control elements such as splinter twin.
March 21, 2015 1:34 a.m.
You might be able to play a few dragons in something like Dragonstorm, but I don't think it's practical.

like I said it used to show up as a modern combo deck before seething song was banned. over all the deck used to play like a slower less efective storm deck. The combo being use spells generate more mana while going through deck to hit dragons storm and bring in 4 hellkites for game. It's an older modern combo quite outdated.

How would they mana ramp into 8-9 the only things I know that mana ramp is stuff like mystics, frontier Seige, and satyr + nykthos?
March 21, 2015 2:16 a.m.
IndepenentMeta says... #24
Why would a staple like that for people to be able to run these things get banned in modern? It just seems unfair... Especially with splinter twin running around..
March 21, 2015 2:34 a.m.
Wizards doesn't like consistent turn three wins in modern. Seething Song was the card that made Storm that one turn faster than the four turn win - like what Twin has - in Modern.
March 21, 2015 2:44 a.m.
JexInfinite says... #26
IndepenentMeta It was banned because it made Storm super good. Storm is one of the oldest combo decks, and Seething Song allowed for consistent T3 wins.

OtakulordAndrew says... #27
If I remember correctly it was banned a couple years ago and hasn't been un banned since. the other main spells in the deck included things like Desperate Ritual, Serum Visions, Manamorphose, peer through the depths, Pyretic Ritual, etc.
March 21, 2015 2:46 a.m.
IndepenentMeta says... #28
Yeah but why not just limit something like in yugioh where you could only play two copies? That way you don't completely loose a card that's important for other decks or just hit the main win con in storm...

Basically splice allows you to play the mana cost of a card that can be splice on to an arcance spell to have the arcane spell's normal ability activate as well as the ability of the card you splice while leaving the spliced card in your hand to be played latter. For example say I play an arcane spell and splice desperate ritual I will still be able to play desperate ritual latter off the mana from the arcance spell I spliced with desperate rituals effect.
March 21, 2015 3:07 a.m.
Hjaltrohir says... #33
How to splice:
HAve a card with the option to 'Splice onto Arcane' and an Arcane in hand
Cast the arcane and pay the splice cost of the other card.
Both spells abilities occur but the card you played with splice stays in your hand so you can splice it or even cast it later.

I saw a bunch of arcane cards and some good ones but wat r the best arcane combos in the game?
March 21, 2015 4:40 a.m.
IndepenentMeta says... #37
I saw a splice draw spell that let you splice for (1xU)(1xCL)That would seem pretty efficient. Also a grave tutor that cost the same except it was (1xB). I'm just gonna look for the best arcane spells to go with that. I also saw a storm mechnaic where it puts 2x goblin tokens times the number of copies of the card you have in your grave. It's a bunch of interesting shit when u switch to modern.

Empty the Warrens. It's a secondary/sideboard plan for Storm if the Grapeshot plan doesn't work G1.

Dragon Broodmother could be worth it especially if you are playing Dragon Tempest that alone is doing a fair amount of damage to your opponent on their turn and on yours without you even attacking. If you are playing ramp it shouldn't be too hard to get her out on turn 4 or so. Also worth a mention is Sarkhan Vol he is a powerhouse but I'm not sure as to his power level in modern at the moment.
March 21, 2015 8:58 a.m.
IndepenentMeta says... #40
JexInfinite sucks that those two spells aren't arcane spells... Shit would've been pretty useful.. Grapeshot is another badass I might try it out.
March 21, 2015 9:13 a.m.
IndepenentMeta says... #41
Dragon Broodmother doesn't sound like a bad choice seeing that she's only a 6 drop. I'm interested in the effect, but the fact that you have to sac 3 creatures for it to be a relevant threat. Kinda doesn't do it for me. Anything else in the exploit variety?
Yeah I have a build I recently made with Sarkhan Vol in modern and I wanna take my iPad to locals and see if they let me use their interenet connection for some modern mock boards....
Does tapped out have an app I could use
March 21, 2015 9:19 a.m.
Broodmate Dragon might be a better shot if you're looking all the way up at six mana dragons. At the very least, if the main dragon gets killed you've still got a 4/4 token out of it.

I've always wanted to use a token deck with Moonveil Dragon in Modern, but it's never fast enough to be good. Ah well...

dan8080 he really shines in tribal but he is ok on his own, Im not sure what modern deck would use him, if any, thoughts?

IndepenentMeta says... #47
Broodmate Dragon looks like a pretty solid choice he drops another 4/4 for 6 what Orginally a dragon would cost. So it wouldn't be a bad tech to use. Thunderbreak Regent is another solid choice. Due to the fact that it's cmc is fairly low for a 4/4 dragon. But that aside would you guys say that his effect is rather lack luster. Anything that targets a creature is usually to kill it. Then it doesn't have an enchantment aura option. Where you could make a aura deck around with dragons mantel, or that other white aura card that lets you draw for each aura...
But I could see both in a mid range/control deck where you could use kill spells to control the board while you build up your mana base for the dragon assault. But idk I think something like that would need some Cryptic Command or Mana Leak to keep board clear... Anybody else have any ideas?

Thoughts on Icefall Regent?
IMO maybe more of a standard card but diffently has some good aspects it could bring to the game. Icefall Regentcould detain one creature as Long as he's on the field. Not only that but it has another good quality in oppressions due lock it could possibly get making the opponent have to pay 2 more for spells. Maybe more of a standard card idk what do you guys think?

And I just found out that Monastery Siege is a 3 drop. That might be good for modern.

Icefall Regent costs too much for something that dies to Lightning Bolt and also doesn't immediately impact the board. I personally wouldn't run it.

I think Mutavault is one of the best Dragons in Modern
