Birthing pod... Going nowhere but down?

Modern forum

Everyone at my local game store is saying that Melira Pod is OP and is eventually going to get banned. I see where they are coming from but I don't think the deck is too OP for I was just crushed by Angel ramp after using melira pod. All I see are staples for that deck going up, up, up.

Point is, what are your thoughts? Answer these questions and a few other things!

Is Melira pod OP?

Should it or will it get banned?

Will staples finally drop or will it go down in the end?

Let me here your thoughts on the questions and some ideas of your own about this topic! Thanks guys and happy deckbuilding!

I think it's an undeniably powerful card. Look no further than that Pro-Tour Valencia match where the Birthing Pod deck almost gets back into the game after being Armageddon ed by Ajani Vengeant . It's replaced Jund as the boogie-man in the format or is at least currently sharing it with Splinter Twin . That said, I don't think it will be banned directly or at least for simply power reasons alone.

One thing WotC has been trying to avoid is recursive games, where a deck makes the same play taking the same lines. For all its toolbox, this is something you see out of Birthing Pod decks a lot. So it has some potential to be banned.

I think what's more likely is that we'll see a ban that let's the steam out of the list a little, not unlike Bloodbraid Elf and Jund. Something like Chord of Calling would basically only hits Birthing Pod decks and eases up on some of the decks tutoring.

As for prices, every Modern staple is going to continue to rise over the coming months as we move into the Modern PTQ season.

Why cannot people realize something has to be Number One? Soon as one card is banned/unbanned were off to the next! jeez people DRS is still warm in the grave. Pod cannot be banned. People will revolt in the streets. Now banning pieces of degenerate combos might happen.

I don't think we will see bans, I think there will be unbannings to let them steam out of combo.

If for some reason something out of Pod was banned, it would probably not be Birthing Pod .

Prices will plateau a bit right now and then rise coming up to PTQ season.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of playing against Melira Pod decks twice. I played a pretty much straightforward Merfolk deck (the usual, 11 lords, aether vial, yadayadayada) and won twice. First match 2-0 and second match 2-1. I wouldn't say it's op. It's strong and versatile. I think it's a cool and fair deck.

And to be honest. Melira Pod doesn't even win that often with the combo. More often it's a beatdown path with having answers to almost everything thank's to Birthing Pod .

i just dont see pod being bannned. i dont play pod, (i am a certified pod killer, with a 80% win ratio against pod at my local store) but even so i think that pod decks look like some of the most challenging and fun decks to pilot. And there are so many different versions of the pod deck, i think its crazy how so many pod decks made top 8 at richmond. just goes to show how versatile the concept truly is.

I think people will plan more for it, and it will not have as strong of a showing next time. Twin will have a stronger showing I think. Then people will plan against that.

it will also only take one other decktype to beat it and twin in comp, and then the game will shift in another direction, which im guessing wil have some sort of black involved in it.
