Brimaz In Soul Sisters

Modern forum

My question is really simple. Why the heck is soul sisters not playing Brimaz, King of Oreskos?

Looking at the card you see a 3 drop, 3/4 with vigilance. Wow already right? Now you see his abilities. He generates tokens too?! Holy crap right? He, himself, can be a close-out along side of Ajani's Pridemate, and the tokens trigger your sisters making pridemate larger, increase your battlefront, and gain you life. If you play Archangel of Thune too, which is not uncommon at all for sisters, you are looking at a force that no one can handle. After playtesting a build I made with Brimaz, the impact was actually quite significant. He is a target for removal, so your pridemate can survive longer. He is a defensive wall against cards like Tasigur, siege rhino and tarmogoyf, and he is just a solid overall card for his mana cost.

Can someone explain to me why he isn't in Soul Sisters already?

My possible explanations:

  • Three mana legend

  • Old habits die hard

Yea, but you can't honestly tell me that he doesn't fit the build perfectly.

I mean... he's a great midrange fit. But Soul Sisters isn't really about midrange. It's soul purpose is gaining an absurd amount of life and using it against your opponent. And while he may be sweet, Brimaz doesn't directly involve himself in either of those two directives, so putting him in could mean losing something functionally more valuable.

Abrupt Decay is a card.

I've been running Brimaz, King of Oreskos since standard and really feel that he needs to be ran as a 4-of to be utilized correctly. People will do everything they can to remove the card because he'll flat out win games on his own.

That being said, I absolutely hate Soul Sisters, I feel it's one of the worst ways any one could play modern. But I put this together a few days ago and feel like the deck should be built like this. Soul Sisters Suck

I know it probably should have Ajani's Pridemate too.

Oooh apple, that is reaalllllly midrangey. Here is the deck that I am talking about. It is the deck that has brimaz in it. It has all of the same functinality and core cards as regular sisters, but it has brimaz too.

Sisters for a Brother

Derpachus, abrupt decay hits pridemate too. Which one would you choose?

APPLE01DOJ says... #9

Try upping Brimaz to 4, you're lists definitely looks more refined.

I may go up to 3. Playing 4 of the same legendary is pretty quirky, especially a legendary that doesnt die to Lightning Bolt. I have noticed a theme that when he hits the table, my opponent quickly changes from offensive to defensive. Mind you, i only play this online, because i dont own it in paper, but a seasoned player can determine an opponents thought pattern. It goes from "let me bolt your face" to "let me play serum visions until i find a terminate". You know what i mean?

You don't run the infinite combo Sergal?

March 4, 2016 1:43 p.m.

Sergal says... #12

Im unaware of it. What is the infinite combo?

March 4, 2016 1:45 p.m.

TMBRLZ says... #13

Leonin Relic-Warder + Phyrexian Metamorph

You have Metamorph enter the battlefield as a copy of itself, exiling itself with Warders ETB ability, thus creating an voluntary infinite loop should you continue to have Metamorph enter as Warder and should you continue to have MetaWarder target itself.

Thus you get infinite creature ETBs for your sisters.

With an Ajani's Pridemate in play you can just infinitely ramp it up.

I mean we are talking about a 20 land deck right. In most cases.

JWiley129 says... #16

Well some lists run Ranger of Eos, so if they can support a 4-drop that finds all their pieces why not run Brimaz, King of Oreskos? Although he's probably better out of the sideboard.

March 4, 2016 2:39 p.m.

Sergal says... #17

yea, ChiefBell, 20 lands. its really plenty when you consider sisters doesn't run any fetches. some lists run the pseudo-fetch Flagstones of Trokair, but either way 20 lands is plenty to consistently drop a 3 drop.

TMBRLZ, that's nasty, but situational infinite combos are not my forte. even though the combo does appear to be pretty consistent, I don't usually include stuff like that in my lists. It is pretty cool though, and maybe one day, I will build something around it.

March 4, 2016 3:26 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #18

Actually 20 lands is exactly on the edge for 3 drops.

March 4, 2016 3:34 p.m.

Sergal says... #19

1 in 3 cards in the deck is a land. that means more than likely you will get 2 in opening hand. no it doesn't always happen that way, but that's just math. since there are no fetches, the land count inside the deck doesn't decrease, so the chances of you drawing a land stay the same 1 in 3. it is likely that 3 lands will be played by turn 4. Brimaz can be played consistently. I haven't had one game where I had him in hand and couldn't cast him. I have had that happed with archangel of thune, but not brimaz.

March 4, 2016 3:43 p.m.

TMBRLZ says... #20

That's because you're on the edge. That's his point.

March 4, 2016 3:46 p.m.

Sergal says... #21

Ooooohhhh. I guess you got a point. However, is in support for playing brimaz or against it?

March 4, 2016 3:49 p.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #22

I'd say that ideal lands for 3 drops is 22, ideal lands for 4 drops is 24, ideal for 5-6 drops = 25, beyond that you're playing, Control, Jank, or not modern.

March 4, 2016 3:52 p.m.

Sergal says... #23

Or you are playing a deck that has a massive amount of lifegain so you can survive until you hit land drops.. This feed is getting pretty cool with all of the different topics coming up. Thanks everyone for putting in the 2 cents.

March 4, 2016 3:56 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #24

I'd rather play 21 or 22 with 3-drops than 20. 20 is mathematically 'fine', but it's not good, if you see what I mean?

You're not in a totally bad position but you're really not in a great position.

March 4, 2016 4:02 p.m.

Sergal says... #25

that makes sense. The average CMC for the deck that I built is slightly above 2 so I think 21 lands won't hurt. Did you get a chance to look at the list? I'd like some input on what to remove... I feel like the overall consensus for the original question is "why not?". Does everyone agree with that?

March 4, 2016 4:07 p.m.

JakeHarlow says... #26

I play 21 with 3 Ranger of Eos.

March 4, 2016 10:35 p.m.

JexInfinite says... #27

Does he do anything the deck doesn't already do? Not really. Spectral Procession or Lingering Souls are the better 3 drops.

March 5, 2016 5:33 a.m.

Sergal says... #28

JexInfinite, correction, Spectral Procession is a 6 drop technically. Brimaz does provide a body for the deck that souls and procession cannot do. Pridemate is the only thing in the deck (aside from the Archangel of Thunes that are played in some builds) that has a body to it. Having brimaz is another threat.

March 5, 2016 9:05 a.m.

JexInfinite says... #29

Exactly. Spectral Procession is a better 3 drop because it's technically a 6 drop. Brimaz does nothing you can't already do. You have Ascendant and Pridemate as bodies, but you don't need bodies. You need to take them to 0, and Brimaz does that worse than other cards do. Sucks against ground creatures, whereas flying spirits are fantastic almost all the time.
