Budget Modern Deck (Kind of)

Modern forum

I've been playing Standard and decided I want to try modern for a little bit, but I don't want to throw money into it just yet. Fortunately, the shop where I'll be playing Modern allows us to proxy 16 cards out of a Modern deck for the tournament, allowing some reach. However, the cost of the rest of the cards I'd rather not spend more than $25ish for (I have tradestuff, but it's all standard). I prefer to play combo decks, but I'm fine playing aggro and my favorite color is MTG color is blue (Tezzeret seems like a really cool planes walker to me-don't know if he's even in the format). A magic experience that standard can't offer. And something that someone completely new to Modern can play and hopefully get a win. (Decklists preferred, and if you could name the cards I need proxied, that'd be great). Thanks!

Hexproof Aura's also seems fun, but I want to try to avoid too many colors if at possible so I don't have to use my 16 fetches on lands.

Matsi883 has a pretty fun looking Modern deck here that isn't super expensive. Its blue and a combo deck, so that kind of meets your requirements. It is a little difficult to play though, so I'd recommend playtesting it quite a bit to get familiar with it, but its by far the best build of its type that I've come across on here.

There's a r/b Grapeshot deck that uses Heartless Summoning + Myr Retriever to up your storm count to twenty, then shoot 'em in the face. The deck can just consist of removal spells and stall until you get your win con. (Use two Retrievers)

I've actually looked at Blistercoil Weird decks, but I think they're a little too fragile for my taste. However, it's not completely off my radar, but not something I want to do.

BLEATH that deck sounds pretty good to me. Any deck lists you can upload since my modern knowledge is next to none (other than Gitaxian Probe .

I'll make the same suggestion I make every time that a budget modern thread pops up. Mono U tron is still the cheapest competitive level deck in the format that puts up numbers frequently.

I stripped down my wife's I Fight For the Users! deck for 2austin5 earlier today, that deck can be seen here: For 2austin5.

Here's the Myr Retriever list. You can also go U/B for things like Tezzeret and Muddle the Mixture . Thoughtseize is also a card to consider, as well as fixing up the mana base.

I actually really like Ohthenoises list. Its also pretty flexible, you can throw in whatever high powered artifact creatures you happen to own or have access to. Hell, with proxies you could even play something like Emrakul.

Usually I steer clear of Eldrazi just because the power of mono U tron comes from the ability to tutor stuff out. That means you'd have to add Eye of Ugin and that's better served in the G/R version usually. (Or the Gifts Ungiven track, not a fan personally.)

Admittedly Colossus of Akros was just the first thing that popped into mind to slot in for Wurmcoil Engine .

Yeah, I was just thinking of the typical huge fatty you could get out with the ramp. But you definitely have a point. He could also just proxy Wurmcoil though.

Blightsteel Colossus might be nice too.

Play Storm. Proxy the Pyromancer's Ascension, Fetches, Serum Visions , and Past in Flames and it's pretty cheap.

There is a fetchless storm that is pretty cheap as well.

There's always cheerios storm which is literally just abunch of 0 cost equipment a guy that draws you cards when you play equipment and all the little cantrips with grapeshot tossed in. Seems like one of the cheapest and easiest to build storm list to build if not just a tad fragile
