Budget Morden

Modern forum

Hello, everybody. I am a casual player, but I am looking to become more and more competitive. I like the idea of modern, and I was wondering what a good budget archetype would be (budget being about 100 U.S. dollars.) Also, I would like to know some staples for those archetypes.

Red deck wins is cheap, simple, and effective.

Mono-red burn and affinity can both be built for relatively little. They're fairly straightforward, too. Try looking at some SCG Decklists

mono black infe3ct is what i have had the bezst luck with, it is strong and under $90, as a budget player myself you could also go with mono blue tron list as well. it is a little ore expensive but also strong.

UG infect tends to be stronger overall because you have access to Glistener Elf , Blighted Agent , and the green pump spells. However, it's tends to get completely blown out by removal.

Affinity, Tron, Soul Sisters/Martyr, Living End, RDW, White Weenie, Merfolk, Goblins, Elves are all the cheapish decks I know of.

You can also do budget versions of decks like Jund and Junk if you are smart in your deck building.

i don't think you can do soul sisters, living end, merfolk and some affinity for under $100 but i could be wrong.

infect has been hated out. LeaPlath has the correct info on whats cheap use mtgtop8.com for a deference of all modern decks that have 4-0 or better in a daily or top 8ed a tournament.

As people have noted, Infect is budget friendly, but has a few weaknesses. My version, Modern Infect, includes some counters and ways around removal, but is still a bit lacking. It is quite budget friendly, though!

Sorry to get back late to you guys, but I stayed up way to late watching Avatar. So far I like the idea of RDW and Mono-Blue tron. I don't like infect all that much (I had purchased Rot from Within), because people (my friends) hated it. What do you you guys think are some good cars and counters for Mono-Blue tron?

Mana Leak can replace Remand as they are like $10 a piece.

not something i would personally ever recommend for external formats. with that being said i realize people don't have a huge flow of cash.

Condescend seems unfair once you hit tron... I like it!

Condescend , Remand , and Spell Burst are the counters most of us UTron players have come to accept as the best possible counter suite. 4xCondescend (needs no explination), 4xRemand ( this deck may not seem like it, but it's tempo oriented and stopping a spell plus cantripping is amazing), and 1xSpell Burst . Some people don't understand why the burst is in there, but it's simple. With enough mana you can essentially lock them out of casting anything you think will hurt you. This combined with the Mindslaver lock and being able to tutor up and cast artifact creatures like Wurmcoil Engine and Sundering Titan plus the other one of creatures in your deck to suit whatever bad situation you may find yourself in are the reasons to play this deck. It has answers for almost any deck, aggro being the main concern, but Oblivion Stone can handle that, plus a few SB'd Dismember s. Just because the deck is cheap compared to other decks does not mean it isn't a great deck. Being mono colored has it's problems, but with the right SB for your meta, you can have a deck that is very competent when it comes to taking down an FNM.

If you have trouble understanding why certain card choices have been made for this deck just ask. I have experience with the deck and it is my main deck when playing modern.

The sad fact is that $100 isn't much for a Modern deck and you're not going to get much out of it. Even Affinity is hard to do at that price because it necessarily relies upon Mox Opal and Arcbound Ravager , Mono-blue Tron is hard because Remand is very important, and Living End is hard because Fulminator Mage suddenly costs an arm and a leg out of nowhere (and it does use fetchlands, though typically only 4 and the least expensive).

For that budget though you can probably have a goblins deck. Goblin Guide would probably be the most expensive card in that deck at around $7. AEther Vial at around $11 is nice in a deck like that, but it's not absolutely necessary. Still, with the negligible cost for the rest of the cards, it's entirely possible that you could run a playset of each and still be able to stay within your budget.

I would not expect such a deck to do well, but you're not going to get a deck that will do well for $100. But it would be a start that would let you see some play and perhaps do well from time to time. I know every now and then one sneaks into 3-1 on MTGO, so it's possible on any given day for it to do some good work.
