Cards without a deck?
Modern forum

Hi people, I wanted to do something original for modern, so are there any good cards that should work in a deck, but there's no deck for them (yet)? Any colour is good, let's see what I can do! (hopefully it'll be good)
I'm aiming to play something that nobody else does, or as little people as possible, but still make it good. I've succeeded in standard (This is what Junk looks like.- junk midrange), but for modern, I don't really know the format well.

You could do an Exalted deck, or possibly a voltron deck, based around Rafiq of the Many and Knight of the Reliquary .
Maybe delve a little deeper than already has been into the Mono Green Devotion with all the hydras? (Khalni Hydra ?)
Arachnus Spinner could make for a cool lock-down style deck as well.

I've made Joke Knight of the Reliquary, it combines knight and my friends old self mill! It made my day lol :)
I think an exalted deck might be tested actually, that's a good idea.

Knight of the Reliquary largely fell out of use with the banning of Wild Nacatl and Bloodbraid Elf in Modern, but is seeing more play now that the Nacatl is back. As for most unfitting card? Steamflogger Boss , due to it having a mechanic that isn't used.

Jacques, I was looking for a card that would be interesting to make a deck with, not something that is good is the right deck, but not for modern.
That's a good point about knight though.

Command thy legion of goblins my fellow caster! I cannot say I hath laid eyes upon a competitive list of goblin tomes played in great numbers. Considering tomes such as AEther Vial , Goblin Guide , Goblin Chieftain , Goblin King (paired with Blood Moon ), etc. and you have some viable strategies

To be fair, Kibler still played Knight of the Reliquary every chance he got. The real problem was Deathrite Shaman made it super weak. With that gone, I suspect that junk will be playing Knight quite a bit.

If you want decks that can do well but don't see play, you can always look to Tezzerator, Assault Loam, Twiddlestorm, Krark-Clan-Combo, Elemental combo, U/W control Tron, Eternal Command, U/W Polymorph control, Mono White polymorph tokens, or mono black control. (Most of these are on my profile somewhere)
The reason people don't play these decks vary from list to list, but it's often to do with bad matchups (Tezzerator, Mono Black Control, elemental combo, mono white polymorph, U/W polymorph control), time constraints (Tezzerator, Eternal Command, Assault Loam), Difficulty of play (Twiddlestorm, Eternal Command, Tezzerator), or simply being poor meta choices (Assault Loam against jund/junk/GB, U/W Tron against Affinity, or eternal command against junk/jund/GB)

Wizard of the Damned, I had a friend who played with goblins, and they were awful. That's kinda put me off goblins tbh, but he didn't build it well, so I could... but I don't think that I will tbh.
The Wizard, these decks sound interesting, but I have no clue what they are, apart from tron (remember that I don't really know modern well). If you could give me a brief summary, that'd be helpful. Also, I was looking to make a new kind of deck, so I am looking for cards that should work, but don't really have a deck atm. Nice running into you again btw ;)

Nearly all of those decks are on my profile. Cards without decks generally won't find decks. But if you wanted something wacky perhaps Jhoira of the Ghitu may be fun.

The_Wizard, yeah I've thought of her lol :) She seems like fun, but is a little too slow for competitive play IMO. I've been thinking for a while, and I think that Tarmogoyf dredge looks interesting ;) That'll take me a long time to build...

I think Tarmogoyf is the opposite of a card without a deck

Thrun, the Last Troll is slightly underplayed IMO, yes it is legendary but it changed games completely on its own. Sarkhan the Mad is another card which I think deserves more modern play but we are yet to see a truly competitive dragon deck, prove me wrong if you wish.

The closest thing we have seen to competitive dragon decks are attempts at Chalice of the Void decks. I have tried and tried. But unfortunately, I cannot make one that runs well in modern.

Well tell me when you have success with the deck, would love a good dragon deck myself.

In legacy, dragon stompy decks are fairly good in metas with lots of fair decks. Dragon stompy is my list.

scottemery, the biggest problem with Chalice of the Void decks is that they took huge hits from every banning that was aimed at storm. Without the availability of Seething Song , Chrome Mox , or even Rite of Flame , the only way to get 2 mana on turn one is with Simian Spirit Guide and a single card is not enough to make a deck.

MindAblaze!, you have a point, but dredge isn't really a modern thing I hear. The idea is to come up with an original deck.
Also, I'm thinking that an original deck isn't necisarily one that isn't played, maybe RWU control with a twist.

@The_Wizard: What would you consider the (generally) 'Bad match-ups' for Mono-Black Control?
I'm asking because I've been crafting a Mono-Black Aggro/Control deck over the past few months that has been shaping up rather nicely (Devoted to Obliteration..), and I've been strongly considering a potential road trip to a PTQ event next month because of which, and I'd like all the input that I can get.. (especially since no one is going to be suggesting DRS anymore.. lol)

That's actually not the mono black control deck I was referencing. The devotion deck is something I'm not a huge fan of just because it has explosive potential and very little to do with it.
Mono Black Control simply does very poorly against creature based combo decks, such as Pod and Twin. It's the deck with Phyrexian Crusader and Phyrexian Vatmother

@The_Wizard: Yeah, I knew it wouldn't be the same kind; I'm familiar with that particular list (I've actually been considering brewing a u/B version of it for the sake of having a few counterspells splashed in..), but I wouldn't consider this "The devotion deck" either.. I have Gary in there because he just so happens to top off my mana curve really well while complimenting the rest of the deck in the process..
The deck I put together (Devoted to Obliteration..) plays towards early-to-mid game disruption & control elements, followed up with pressure from my 3-drops (several with ETB abilites), then when most decks run out of steam trying to dealing with them-- out come the heavy 4-drop beaters to seal the deal.. I just want to do my best to reasonably cover all the bases that I can before trying to 'take on the big dogs,' so to speak..
But to also play toward the original topic of discussion.. I find it odd that a powerhouse like Phyrexian Obliterator hasn't seen virtually any upper level play since it's rotation out of Standard.. Which of course is the original reason I started brewing this deck in the first place.. But I'm sure it's likely to become even more relevant once Zoo starts picking back up again...

Knight of the Reliquary ?
I don't know if I'm wrong but it seems like I never see her in any lists.
