I play a living end deck and I want to put either Boil or Choke in the sideboard against control decks. But which one is the strongest?
Choke because you get it out earlier. As Glisteneragent said - before cryptic.

For some reason i thought Choke was 4 mana. Yeah choke is indeed the better option

Don't underestimate instant speed, however. If you have access to both, go with Choke, but neither are a bad choice.

idamn those are both from 8th edition? they were really hating on blue at the time i guess.

We also cards like Blood Moon, Defense Grid, Ensnaring Bridge, Fecundity, Flashfires, Karma, etc. that could hate on control. 8th edition was weird.

Flashfires and Karma were both in Alpha, and the cross colour hate goes on and on...

The bridge also came out in Stronghold, Fecundity in Urza's, Blood Moon in The Dark... I wan't trying to claim these were their first prints. Just to make the case that 8th ED did contain many cards that we'd think of as good vs control.

If you're just sideboarding them for Control then Choke is better. However, if you expect to see a deck like Merfolk, then Boil is better. You don't want to make Spreading Seas as good as it is under Choke, and you don't want them to be able to cast AEther Vial off of an Island that they play after Choke.

The opponent can get back on track though. If they suspect Choke, they can leave up triple blue, then go Cryptic Command bounce and untap into counterspells.

Well..... then they're leaving up triple blue - which is a lot. It's putting them many turns behind.

Choke. It's harder to deal with, and costs less, so you can sometimes get it under counterspells (especially Cryptic Command).
