comboing out of modern
Modern forum

I am looking for a competitive combo deck in modern that is also a blast to play. I would like it to be under the radar (aka not that well known). I would like to find a cool way to break lightning coils if there is any competitive way to do that. Any ideas?
PS. There doesn't need to be a budget, but if it is props to you.

All the combo decks in Modern:
Melira/Kiki Birthing Pod
Amulet of Vigor Combo
UR Storm Combo
Infect
Those are the at least partially viable archetypes. Unfortunately, Lightning Coils is probably too slow to be competitvely viable. I have a blast playing Pod, Infect and Scapeshift, but be sure to test all of them to see which ones you enjoy playing. Google should help finding reasonable decklists.

I agree, and I might add in Jeskai Ascendency, but I want to try and find something new and fun to play with my friends without being blown out.

There's a storm type combo with Blistercoil Weird and Paradise Mantle you can try. Its not super competitive, but it will go off occasionally.

Blister storm is hysterically stupid. You either combo off T2 or you lose. It's one of my favorites

Its really hysterical when the other player hasn't seen it before, and you just crush them with a 1 drop after a 10 minute turn 2.

"Fun" is relative. That's what I always tell my buddies after winning with Krark-Clan Ironworks combo.

There's some weird version of Modern storm that tries to use mana acceleration and Grapeshot or Empty the Warrens (not Blister storm), but it's pretty inconsistent and nowhere near as good as its Legacy counterpart. If you want crazy single turn combos, just go to Legacy and play something like some storm variant (Doomsday, Spanish Inquisition, or just conventional storm), Elves, or even Four Horsemen (which is a HUGE pain to play for and against unless you relish judges and whoever is across the table to give you a nasty look). Modern is somewhat limited in its card choices, so going off in a sweeping manner in a single turn isn't common if that's what you're looking for. Scapeshift is definitely a lot of fun though, as the Ad Nauseam combo.

You could use Lightning Coils as your wincon in a Heartless Summoning combo deck. It would be slower than milling them with Altar of the Brood, but it would still work. Feel free to look at my deck for how it works. Heartless Myrs of the Brood

@bigguy99 - modern storm is not unreliable. Kai Budde, Jon Finkel, and many other members of team channel fireball have piloted it to reasonable finishes at many pro level events.

@bigguy99 You effectively can't play Four Horsemen anymore without getting game/match losses for slow play. When it first started to make the competitive scene, a head judge cited that "It is also slow play if a player continues to execute a loop without being able to provide an exact number of iterations and the expected resulting game state." Your loop in Four Horsemen is milling until you hit an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, at which point your gamestate is identical to when you started; an empty graveyard and a Basalt Monolith and Mesmeric Orb on the battlefield.
Basically, you can only execute the combo until you hit Emrakul, the Aeons Torn twice in a row without doing anything else in between to advance the gamestate. This means you have to get super lucky and, during the second iteration of the milling loop, you hit Dread Return, Sharuum the Hegemon, and Blasting Station before you hit your first Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. Alternatively, you have to do something in between resolutions of Emrakul, the Aeons Torn's trigger, like advance to another phase of the turn, cast a spell, etc. Or you have to play it at a low enough level that your opponent won't know to call a judge.
None of these things are reliable enough to make the deck worthy of playing.

That's why I said to only play the deck if you hate judges and whoever you're playing against, haha. There are plenty of other reliable infinites in the format anyway.

In legacy, the best combo deck (IMO) is Breakfast burrito.
You combo of T1/T2 by milling your whole deck with Balustrade Spy and then get Laboratory Maniac onto the field to win...
It is very fun (and relatively easy/cheap) to play as well.

You all say Birthing Pod + Melira, Sylvok Outcast but forgot that Pods main combo right now is usually Archangel of Thune and Spike Feeder.

Decks are cutting combos entirely for more midrange stuff. It's interesting and quite powerful.

Thank you all for the ideas. I think I am going to try a take on lemmingllama's Heartless Summoning deck. But it all helps for future decks.

@themindxyz If you post up your deck build here or on my profile, I can try to give some suggestions on it. Anyways, have fun with the janky combos.

Probably the 3 best combos in modern: Scapeshift, Splinter Twin/Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker, and Birthing Pod+Melira, Sylvok Outcast.
