I think Elves or Goblins could work in modern, maybe not as tier 1/2, but they still work. But really we just need a couple more OP elephants printed in Magic Origins/ BFZ to push Elephant Tribal into Tier 1 Category :D

Young Pyromancer vs Monastery Mentor in:

Mardu, Jeskai, Naya

April 26, 2015 1:42 a.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #23

Monastery Mentor needs 0 cmc stuff to give it value the moment it comes out. Otherwise, it'll just die way too quickly, unless you are running protection grants like Emerge Unscathed. If that's the case, then you need ramp, otherwise it comes out too late to give any benefit.

April 26, 2015 1:45 a.m.

Mardu: youngy

america:mentor

maya: neither

April 26, 2015 1:45 a.m.

JexInfinite says... #25

In Mardu, I would say Young Pyromancer. You don't want to drop a Mentor on T3, when you could drop a Pyromancer on T2, and trigger it multiple times on T3. You can't protect either, but on the play, you could Terminate a Goyf on T3 and generate a token for it. With Mentor, you need to hold it, making it worse, or play it out, and wait for it to die.

In Jeskai, you can protect both, but Young Pyromancer is way faster, and you have access to Delver of Secrets  Flip, so there's that. Mentor is too slow in Delver.

In Naya, Pyro is still better, but Atarka's Command + Monastery Mentor or Dromoka's Command is really strong. You can use the commands offensively, or defensively, which makes them much more interesting than jamming a command as a Skullcrack. Of course, Pyro is a lot faster, and you can trigger it multiple times on T3.

In short, always play Young Pyromancer over Monastery Mentor if you have the option.

April 26, 2015 1:49 a.m.

it all depends on your meta, realy.

April 26, 2015 1:51 a.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #27

The commands with mentor is interesting, however you'd need to protect it the turn it comes out. Which comes out too late for it to provide benefit. Unless you run ramp, but then you are devoting too much space to try and get mentor to work, and it won't be worth it. So in short, any deck that doesn't run a plethora of 3 cmc stuff, YP>MM

April 26, 2015 1:52 a.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #28

0 cmc stuff, 0 cmc stuff. Not 3 cmc stuff.

It's my brother's deck, but I keep it updated since I pay more attention to "the Meta" as it were.

April 26, 2015 2:05 a.m.

JexInfinite says... #32

DERPLINGSUPREME Why yes, you are.

Infect is not as good as it was at the PT, but still decent. It may be time for BUG Infect to be the main form of infect, because the disruption is really strong, and covers on of the deck's weaknesses. Of course, blue has counterspells for protection, but disruption can attack the opponent's game plan from the beginning.

What are the best cards that utterly demolish today's meta?

The two that come to my mind are: Silent Arbiter and Worship.

Worship with a Sylvan Caryatid is hilarious.

It doesn't work to well against Twin though. Because Cryptic Command.

The_Raven says... #45

I wonder..... Could mill be a slighty competitive deck?

If not.... What cards do you guys think would make it a good deck? :)

April 26, 2015 7:23 a.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #46

Mill is ... eh ... basically it is giving your opponent free reign over you. They can just turn sideways or combo off. That's the main problem with it. In order to stand much of a chance you need to run anti Leyline of Sanctity hate (ie, Esper Charm, OR, mainboarding Echoing Truth), some form of removal to stop Twin, enough disruption to stop RDW, and yet still be able to finish them off.

What does it need? Another Glimpse the Unthinkable, but yet tied onto removal or counterspell. Or even a draw spell. Things like:

Counter target spell with cmc 3 or less. That spell's owner mills 6 cards.

Destroy target creature with cmc 4 or less. That creature's controller mills 6 cards.

Draw 2 cards. Target opponent mills 7 cards.

April 26, 2015 7:52 a.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #47

OR, how about this:

  • Dimir Command —
  • Instant — Rare
  • Choose two:
  • Draw 2 cards.
  • Counter target spell with converted mana cost 3 or less.
  • Destroy target creature with converted mana cost 3 or less.
  • Target opponent puts the top 10 cards of his or her library into his or her graveyard.
April 26, 2015 7:55 a.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #48

Or hey, you could actually make that cost . Then control would finally have its counterspell and draw spell it needs to put it over the top.

April 26, 2015 7:57 a.m.

That, Femme, would be my wet dream :)

Not happening though. And I think mill works decently in the current meta. It could maybe use some Sleep effect, because I've always struggled against the heavy creature base of Abzan.

April 26, 2015 8:25 a.m.

JexInfinite says... #50

Femme_Fatale I would be heavily inclined to make it to make it harder to cast, because for 3 mana, that's really, really good.

It's a command, so you would have to draw a single card, rather than two. Drawing 1 card can justify the cost of . Think Twice is 5 mana for draw 2. Esper Charm has options, but you can only choose one. That 'Dimir Command' would break Grixis Delver. (But damn, then my deck would get an insane power boost.)
