Dank or Jank?: Sulfuric Vortex
Modern forum

I was scouring my collection the other day searching for some staples when I came across Sulfuric Vortex. I was pretty interested when I got to reading the card kinda thinking it was a combined version of Eidolon of the Great Revel and Leyline of Punishment.
To my disappointment I learned that this card is not Modern legal but got to wondering... if this card was reprinted in an upcoming Standard or Modern Horizons set would it see any play?
I could see some potentially interesting combos, but like shadow63 said it isn’t a very competitive card.

I think I view it in the same lense as I see something like Everlasting Torment... not exactly main deck material but could be a spicey sideboard option in certain metas.... I'm personally just a bit traumatized from playing ARENA when those Ajani's Pridemate decks were running around lol... I know it's a completely different story/game but I'm just being honest.

Not in pure burn, but maybe in URx control? I would at least try it in Blue Moon (not that Blue Moon has a huge presence right now) or a Grixis or Jeskai control.

Sulfuric Vortex is a bit too expensive at three mana. Roiling Vortex will do most of what you need it to in Modern right now, with a little upside.

Yeah i don’t see a world where this replaces Roiling Vortex

oh yeah I forgot about Roiling Vortex lol... very similar card to Sulfuric Vortex in nature but I think the 5 Damage for mana spells is what makes it more relevant due to things like Summoner's Pact and Force of Negation or other "cast without paying its mana cost" shenanigans... at least I'm assuming that's how/why this is in MTG Top8 sideboards not so much for the added damage/lifegain prevention.

Icbrgr the lifegain prevention is also useful against Omnath decks

I think a card like that would be okay alongside a damage replacement effect. Something like Worship or Elderscale Wurm where you don’t prevent the damage, but instead replace it.

It's too slow to see modern play. Turn 3 is when burn decks want to be winning
