Dash hopes?

What is the viability of Dash Hopes in rock builds? I feel like it could be a good option for midrange decks, so why is this card not used often?

Rocknj06: Either choice still sucks for them. Why is this a bad choice? You obviously wouldn't use it for crucial points like when Twin is comboing off or tron is dropping a bomb.

As said above. If your opponent is about to land a Splinter Twin, they'll just take the 5 life and win anyway.

@Infinimage007: But imagine if instead of playing Dash Hopes, you just played more copies of Thoughtseize, Inquisition of Kozilek, Tidehollow Sculler, or Duress. Then you can take out crucial cards. Or if the point is to do damage, why not just play another creature?
Being a completely dead card when Tron is dropping Karn Liberated or your opponent is casting Splinter Twin seems really bad. If you can't stop your opponent from winning, then how much is the card really doing?

sylvannos: I understand now. Is Vexing Devil afflicted with this problem too?

@Infinimage007: Pretty much. The second Monastery Swiftspear was printed meant Vexing Devil would never see play in Modern again. You'll hear some people argue that he's 4 damage for 1 mana, but it doesn't change how many turns it takes to kill your opponent. Or you'll hear that it eats a removal spell so Goblin Guides and whatnot stick around, in which case it's "Why don't you just play Thoughtseize if you want to stop their removal?"

Vexing Devil would still be a pretty solid card if his toughness was 4, I believe. But RDW simply has no place for creatures that have neither haste nor toughness to survive a Bolt. (Eidolon of the Great Revel being the sole exception)

Well in a Sligh RDW Devil could be excellent. But thats not really a tying in modern. Devil is the best "opponent option card" ever printed, and even it is mostly not playable in constructed.

Yeah youve pretty much gotten your answer already, but to reiterate, it just doesnt end up being the counter spell you want it to be. they will pay 5 life more often than not.

Because it lets your opponent choose. How often is Browbeat used?
