Dragging someone into Magic.

Hey guys, so to start off I got a friend of mine hooked into Magic recently. I was gonna build a budget U/R delver sort of deck for him. But with cruise banned. I kinda lost the mood. lol. He likes control style decks. However he doesnt wanna dump to damn much money into a deck off the bat. I got him into modern because he hates the idea of rotation. So id like some ideas on a budget control style deck. Maybe Hate Bears too.

Possibly the U/W Midrange list that Tzu Ching (Not suprised if thats spelt wrong) played at worlds a couple of years ago.
The UW Manabase could bring him closer to a UWR manabase in the future.

Mono black discard isn't really a control deck per se. It's plays quite aggressively and proactively.

You mention on your profile that you watch Tolarian Community College, He has a budget Mono Black on there does he not?

You can always cut Lily in an effort to save your wallet.

Does he want to play competitively or just casually? The most competitive modern control deck under $150 is probably Mono-U Tron, which is a) really fun and skillful to play, and b) probably the most control-oriented one of all the tier 1-2 decks.
More casually, there's a lot of options. U/W are great control colours, I'll include two of my own budget modern-legal U/W lists: [Budget Modern] UW $75 Control! and U/W Pixy Stix! *Budget*. R/W Modern Stax is also a cool choice, such as [Idea] Boros Lockdown. I also have a budget U/R Delver pre-Khans list if your friend is interested, that's a lot of fun in casual play (you'll just have to swap the Preordains for something else: [Semi-Budget] UR Delver. Sorry for the shameless plugs, it's just easier to post decklists than explain the various possiblities.

UW/x control is the most control orientated of all the decks in moder and can be built on budget.......
If you go on to my profile and look at my deck folders I have a budget folder too. Few decks in there.

burn is cheap. Goblin Guide is the most expensive card the deck needs, everything is no more than a few dollars each.
this conviently in the rotation deck is a great example of burn atm: (RWB Burn)[http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/24-01-15-rwb-burn/]. if you ignore the land, it should be a relatively easy deck to pick up. and i does well!

I think 8-rack might be a slid pick for him. It is a bit controlly as well as cheap-ish. If you did go 8rack I would cut Liliana of the Veil for something like Liliana Vess or Smother.

bijschjdbcd says... #18
Most definitely not Vess, Waaaaay to expensive for the Modern format.

I don't know, with budget under $150 the deck isn't going to be very competitive?!?
Even so, I get your point, maybe a playset of Smother then...

Go for the Throat... Dismember...
There areso many cards to fit in the various slots, Liliana Vess wouldnt help the deck be any more competitive, it would only make it worse.

I'm in the same spot currently- couple friends that want to play but its damn hard to jump into competitive magic. What I've done is just make a flavor deck that isn't very good (RG werewolves) to use against whatever prebuilt they buy.

8 rack doesn't play reactively it plays proactively. It absolutely does not want to be full of killspells.

A cheap Modern deck that is pretty fun to play is Simic Control, you use counterspells and bounces at first, then win through either the fast route of Delver of Secrets Flip and Quirion Dryad or through the slow route of Obstinate Baloth and Thragtusk. If you do the slow route, Ghostly Flicker is very good.
A deck that he could also build to with this one would be Mono- Tron or Extra Turns, since both need a lot of counterspells and such

I was hoping someone mentioned blue Tron, haha thank you lemmingllama. It can be built for around $100 now that Wurmcoil is so cheap. Ideal lists will probably run up to $150-200, but it functions at $100.

Honestly, 8Rack is not a budget friendly deck. Thoughtseize is $20, Ensnaring Bridge is $25, and Lili is $60. All of those are must haves as 3-4 ofs. It's also not at all beginner friendly. You have to be pretty experienced, especially in the meta, to know which cards to rip from your opponent, in which order, and side boarding can also be extremely difficult.

Your friend could also probably do bw tokens starting with the event deck and adding lands and thoughtseize.

If you want to bring someone into Magic, have competitive non-rotating decks AND not spend too much money, maybe paper Pauper is a better choice than Modern.

Here, Paint the Town Blue, controlling, beat down, and combo all in one deck. It's listed at $133 and is a fun deck to play. Lots of lines of play which will give him the option of going for a combo kill, landing a Wurmcoil Engine, or beating down with small creatures pumped by Grand Architect. The deck is stupidly powerful and can find pieces to end the game fast!
January 24, 2015 8:26 p.m.
I agree with Necrotesque. I think Pauper or Commander will be a better place for him to start. I don't feel like Modern is a good introductory format either, personally.

You might be able to go rogue in modern? You could use Banefire
+
Grand Architect
+
Pili-Pala
in a mono- control shell utilising Mana Leak, Condescend etc.and its cheap too!
Also, or mono-
Extra Turns can be fun. Uses Walk the Aeons, Temporal Mastery, Time Warp and Savor the Moment to get a ton of extra turns and it is probably quite cheap...
