Will Atarka's Command be modern playable? alttext

You can play it in burn with the 3 damage + +1/+1 effect, with Monastery Swiftspear it will be +2/+2, however if there is any lifegain you can use the no lifegain effect. Does it make the cut? I'm playtesting ATM.

Well most RDW is already splashing for SB destructive revelry so it seems like a shoe in.

March 5, 2015 1:23 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #3

Yes. For decks that splash G for Destructive Revelry it's a great card.

It is possible, but not certain, that zoo could also like it.

Dalektable says... #4

I like it. I like it a lot. Muy bueno. Tres bien.

Hjaltrohir says... #5

Maybe in burn. Maybe in zoo. Maybe in Scapeshift? I don't know what it will do to the format.

xlaleclx says... #6

Its really just not very good. Its just too inefficient for burn to play.

March 5, 2015 2:55 p.m.

xlaleclx says... #7

Not sure what just happened there

March 5, 2015 2:55 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #8

5 potential damage off a single card is worth it. I think in legacy theres a 2 mana card that does 4 damage that's played.

March 5, 2015 2:56 p.m.

its also Skullcracks 5-8

March 5, 2015 2:59 p.m.

xlaleclx says... #10

Flame Rift doesnt have any requirements to do 4 damage though. This card is only good when you have creatures. Otherwise it's just bad skullcrack.
It could possibly see play but I feel like it will be just a little bit too weak.

March 5, 2015 3:01 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #11

Why is it a 'bad' skullcrack? Just because it doesn't have the 'damage can't be prevented this turn' clause? That's really relevant.

March 5, 2015 3:05 p.m.

@xlaleclx

The only thing that keeps this card from being strictly better than Skullcrack is the mana cost, and that isn't a problem if you cut a basic for a Stomping Ground.

Four-of is quite likely. I can see cutting them if you don't want eight maindeck anti-lifegain cards.

March 5, 2015 3:05 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #13

Well it also is the fact that with swiftspear you get the prowess trigger, and the 3 damage, and the +1/+1 giving you 5 damage off a single card.

March 5, 2015 3:07 p.m.

Actually, the damage prevention clause can kill Kor Firewalker too, which is semi-relevant.

March 5, 2015 3:19 p.m.

I want this just for the land ability. I love me some mana ramp.

March 5, 2015 3:22 p.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #16

I like it moreSkullcrack

quesobueno123 says... #17

I really need these.

vishnarg says... #18

Naya burn will become best burn. Goodbye bump in the night.

March 5, 2015 4:48 p.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #19

Question for all the Burn players here. 19 lands 3 colors, (splash is for bump, helix, & charm) What is the right number of fetches?

March 5, 2015 4:58 p.m.

quesobueno123 says... #20

9-10

March 5, 2015 5:07 p.m.

I'm against splashing a fourth color for Bump if you're playing the Command. Probably just 2 Stomping Ground, 2 Sacred Foundry, 3 Mountain, 13 fetchlands. You may want a third Sacred Foundry depending on how many white spells could be in your deck at any point.

March 5, 2015 5:21 p.m.

vishnarg says... #22

Yeah, no need for Bump at this point.

March 5, 2015 5:23 p.m.

APPLE01DOJ says... #23

Well bumps there because it's there in physical form. I currently have 11 fetches in but 3 are Polluted Deltas as place holders for Arid Mesas which is another reason for using bump (at least until this is printed). I was thinking 13 fetches would be right number for the final build though so good to know!

March 5, 2015 6:08 p.m.

This is totally modern playable. The reasons have been stated, and I really don't understand your thoughts on why it isn't that great xlaleclx

March 5, 2015 6:14 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #25

Because for two mana you can do 6 damage with 2 bolts, or a bolt and something else. Still, this is one card, not two.

March 5, 2015 6:20 p.m.

Jojja says... #26

Id say we might play 2 in Burn, adding more cmc2 spells is not what the deck needs. In Zoo I can see playing 4, Steppe Lynx and Knight of the Reliquary booster with playing extra fetchlands while also bolting or buffing the team.

March 5, 2015 6:41 p.m.

sylvannos says... #27

I like this because it justifies playing green for Tribal Flames.

...not that Tribal Flames is superior to straight-up playing Blood Moon, but I really want to play Tribal Burn. XD

March 5, 2015 6:48 p.m.

@Programmer_112 it cant kill the firewalker because it only hits players

March 5, 2015 6:58 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #29

selesvyaloverer8 Target the player then Pyroclasm. It still can't be targeted but it can now be killed.

Really stupid rules loophole.

March 5, 2015 7 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #30

"702.16e Any damage that would be dealt by sources that have the stated quality to a permanent orplayer with protection is prevented."

March 5, 2015 7:01 p.m.

Pyrite Spellbomb was the PT secret tech. Also gets Etched Champion.

March 5, 2015 7:09 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #32

Wait, can someone explain that in detail please?

March 5, 2015 7:11 p.m.

Protection effects prevent all damage that would be dealt to a creature from the source. Skullcrack them after they blocked your Monastery Swiftspear and watch a man/woman cry.

As for the Spellbomb, it's colorless and so the ability gets through protection.

March 5, 2015 7:13 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #34

ChiefBell The rules explicitly state that damage dealt is "prevented"

Skullcrack says that damage can't be prevented this turn.

You target the player with Skullcrack, then play Pyroclasm. Since damage can't be prevented and Kor Firewalker isn't being "targeted" the damage will be marked and cannot be prevented.

March 5, 2015 7:14 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #35

Thank you both.

March 5, 2015 7:15 p.m.

Ohthenoises says... #36

Np, like I said, it is a REALLY stupid rules loophole that honestly makes about as much sense as a rubber thumb-tacked to the bulletin board.

TBH it's a loophole I have forgotten about.

As a side note, Excruciator can hilariously kill creatures with protection from red that dare to block it.
