Eldrazi viable?

Modern forum

I've got some groundwork for an eldrazi deck, other than the actual eldrazi. I just came back to the game towards the end of the innistrad block, just missing them, and ever since I'd seen them, it's been in my blood to make a deck with them. Only problem is, I've never really played modern, and as I went through the old mirrodin cards I've got looking for my cloudposts, I also thought about running an affinity deck once again. So are eldrazi decks actually viable in the modern meta, or would I be better off, putting my efforts towards an affinity deck?

Well, Cloudpost s are banned in modern. So if you are going to use Eldrazi, you're going to need a ton of ramp or ways to cheat it out like certain combos or Elvish Piper (which may also be banned?). I don't know much about the modern meta, but I know that its possible to use Eldrazi to good effect.

The most common way to play the Eldrazi are in Urzatron decks (decks that use Urza's Mine , Urza's Tower and Urza's Power Plant to ramp into big often colorless spells). Some decks have tried to use Through the Breach or Goryo's Vengeance to get a good attack in and force the opponent to annihilate everything. To my knowledge none of those decks have had a great level of success.

From what I've seen, even the fastest Eldrazi deck isn't competitive in Modern, but it can be built.

The most solid technique I've seen is using Eldrazi Spawn tokens for mana production (Awakening Zone and similar), if you REALLY want to go Eldrazi.

But if you want to go competitive in Modern, I think this isn't a concept that'll help you very much.

Here's a U/G Tron deck I'm working on. It's win condition is a sinlge Emrakul, the Aeons Torn , although I'm looking to add Kozilek, Butcher of Truth as a back-up.

You only need to cast one Eldrazi to win the game, so having an entire deck of them is "win more." As Arachnarchist said, there's the Through the Breach version by Travis Woo that likes playing multiple Eldrazi.

Agreed, tron is probably the best-known way to power out eldrazi is by tron. Eye of Ugin + emrakul can be powered out relatively early, while tron tends to run a control shell to stall until it gets the pieces online.

There are also some really rogue reanimator-ish decks that run Through the Breach with emrakul, but also use Goryo's Vengeance to cheat it into play (since it's an instant it can return emrakul before the shuffle trigger resolves).

There are plenty of ways to get heaps of mana quickly in modern. Heck, you can do it in standard. DGM: Super Ramp is a standard deck that can do it quickly. I've made a stupid deck with 4x Birds of Paradise , 4x Joraga Treespeaker 4x Arbor Elf 4x Llanowar Elves 4x Rampant Growth 4x Ranger's Path 3x Boundless Realms and some other ridiculous stuff (along with eldrazi). The bottom line is: can it be done? yes, can it be done consistently and competitively? Well... not really, unless you go for tron, but then you'd be using Karn Liberated , Platinum Emperion etc. as your wincons.

Is there any way to return a card from your graveyard to the battlefield without paying it's mana cost? I'm sure u could dredge a Eldrazi & return it to get it out fairly quick.

@APPLE01DOJ: Yeah, it's Goryo's Vengeance . You put the "shuffle it back into its owner's library" on the stack, then cast Goryo's Vengeance at instant speed.

Also curious about using Tooth and Nail , or if it's just kinda been phased out, since I last played. Then again I guess it still might not be better than the ol' Platinum Angel , Leonin Abunas combo, my frield loved to pull out.

Quicksilver Amulet is a nice way to get eldrazzi onto the battlefield, as well as other goodies. It can be used to flash in a surprise It That Betrays at the end of their turn, allowing you to steal all their things, or just sack all of them with the other eldrazi. if you get an Etherium Sculptor down, this can be done on turn 4 easily.

another option is to run a near creatureless deck that uses Possibility Storm and a couple of cheap creatures to tutor for those eldrazzi.

there are tons of options for getting them out, and that is probably why their prices remain at around $30 for ulamog and kozilek.

'comboes with Platinum Angel ' I love that line. It's like 'comboes with Emrakul, the Aeons Torn ' Those sorts of cards don't need to combo with anything. Avacyn, Angel of Hope protects herself also, so if your friend is doing that suggest avacyn.
