EMN in modern

Modern forum

Posted on July 12, 2016, 5:31 a.m. by ChiefBell

Just a quick thread to ask which cards you guys think will be interesting in modern.

Any and all suggestions please. Reasons welcomed along with walls of text but if you don't feel like that, just card names on their own is ok as well.

Writing an article on this and would like to take a wider view.

Eldritch Evolution - mainly company decks, but could create a new archetype with Allosaurus Rider.
Emrakul, the Promised End - tron can cast this really easily on turn 4-5 and it is a game-breaking effect 90% of the time.
Spell Queller - I have played eldrazi and taxes, excluding the taxes for splashing blue for Delay and Ulamog's Nullifier. This slots right in there for me.
Thalia, Heretic Cathar - good stats and the ability to neuter fetches is real.
splendid reclamation - budget Scapeshift is a good card imo.

Boza Care to explain the potential. Allosaurus Rider archetype? It sounds interesting

Harmless Offering - I'm interested to see what donate in modern can do.

Deploy the Gatewatch - CoCo for planeswalkers?

Eternal Scourge - casting from exile in any color? Sounds good to me.

Most of the other cards seems more geared towards standard, edh, and draft to me... perhaps Lupine Prototype can be a secondary wincon in 8-rack or similar deck.

Turn 1 noble hierarch and allosaurus rider.

Turn 2 eldritch evolution allosaurus into iona, shield of emeria.

Deck seems interesting but bad.

Delve creatures would be another way of doing it that would be somewhat more independently useful than Allosaurus Rider, if not as fast.

Maybe I'm way off, but I really like the synergy between Sigarda's Aid and the Swords. It could often lead to a turn 3 creature (with double strike?) swinging in with a sword.

Maybe it's too gimmicky, but it seems strong.

Spell Queller is a Counterspell - that can actually 'counter' Supreme Verdict / Abrupt Decay / Slaughter Games - on a 2/3 flying guy. That's insane.

He's gonna be useful in most matchups (aside from Tron and Eldrazi) bc it hits anything with 4 CMC and under, which must be like 80% of modern's spells. If you ever experienced a good old 'Snapcaster beatdown' on an opponent like I have, you should be excited about this card too, cuz it flies :>

Aside from this card, I think Unsubstantiate might see some play too because of it's versatility. Clearly not as good as Remand or Vapor Snag but more flexible than those :)

July 12, 2016 8:03 a.m.

Unsubstantiate can hit Abrupt Decay and other uncounterable spells in the format, leaving it as a solid sideboard card for Tempo, Control, and Combo decks.

Liliana, last hope is going to be my budget Lili of the Veil and I'm also going to play Collective Brutality in my modern deck, but it's off meta.

Elder Deep-Fiend should see 1-of mainboard or sideboard play in modern grixis control as an amazing answer to nahiri jeskai. They ult nahiri, you flash this in, tap their Emrakul, then it gets exiled end of turn. Also allows you to dodge path, which is very relevant in a kommand deck.

Hanweir garrison / hanweir battlements seem playable in skred, but ChiefBell you know way more about skred than me. Thoughts? Too aggressive and can't help on defense like PiKi?

Coax from the blind eternities should see play in mono-u tron from what I've heard to fetch old Emrakul, newlamog, and all is dust.

Edit: crap, double post.

I'm thinking draw-go control will be interested in using some Blessed Alliance as a good way to cover many different bases -- it's great against Burn, Zoo, Infect, and Bogles; and it's typically never a bad card because it always does something.

I can see the new Tamyo as an additional 4drop in Bant-Company Lists.
Bant company lost a little bit of importance since the Eldrazi-Menace has been dealt with, but it's still a good deck.

Gisela, the Broken Blade, Grim Flayer, and Gnarlwood Dryad are my picks. Curious homonculus seems good and so does Strange Augmentation

Personally I'm excited to slot Sigarda's Aid into my Cheerios deck.

I think we could have an awesome BG aggro deck now with Grim Flayer and Mournwillow. Delirium should be easy to turn on with cards like Grisly Salvage, etc. Gnarlwood Dryad seems sweet too!

I really like Unsubstantiate. Spell Queller is going to make a huge splash in UW tempo.

Of course Eldritch Evolution will be good. It will likely end up banned within a year.

I'm not as impressed with Tamiyo. I don't think she will find a home in Modern, but I'm willing to be proven wrong on that.

Oh yeh I forgot about Sigarda's Blessing! The card is a powerhouse in any equipment deck. My brother's gonna be happy I swear :)

I therefore feel a comeback of several swords since you can basically pay to play and equip it EoT. Then untap and swing with your Geist of Saint Traft / Thrun, the Last Troll. Mhhh gonna be so gewd :>

For me it's Splendid Reclemation all day. In fact, I've already made a deck here that I've been testing and tweaking. Soon I'm going to need outside opinions if anyone wants to take a look and help. :P

I'd love to see that :>

Could Sigarda's Blessing see play in Bogles?

I don't know the deck that well, but my guess is no, as the 1-Drop slot is completely saturated.

The concept seems like a good fit. I think it misses, just by a bit, in the deck.

Here's a question... When Scapeshift decks go off, how many lands are typically in their graveyard (before sac'ing to Scapeshift)?

Just wondering how 'different' the deck would have to be in order to rely on 'Splendid Reclamation' rather than Scapeshift.

Since SR only requires 1 , you may be able to move heavily into Red, and attempt to get a lot of cards in the graveyard.

Probably a lot less reliable... but might be worth a quick look.

Boza says... #23

No, not for bogles. There is absolutely no need to fill the deck with even more horrible topdecks than the ones it already plays for the extremely marginal upside of playing auras at instant speed.

Bogles can afford to play auras at sorcery speed, because its creatures have hexproof, negating most removal headed their way.

This is my second version. It runs pretty heavy on the shocklands unfortunately, but I'm not finding a way around it without missing out on some consistency.

Oh yeah, Acorn Harvest is my substitute for Splendid regrowth, seeing as that card hasn't been added yet

I think Gnarlwood Dryad is super powerful in the right deck, probably the Naya decks that played Mishra's Bauble.

Spell Queller is good but not game breaking, I don't see any Tier one archetypes coming out of its prin ting but I would certainly play UW Spirits in Modern if my store actually ran Modern events...

Assuming you could get enough lands in the bin before Turn 4 then the Budget Scapeshift is super interesting, again, nothing super overpowered...but it is certainly a powerful effect.

Grim Flayed has potential but is absolutely miserable when facing Taro goyfs and Tasigurs. If you have Delirium then their Goyf conveniently devours it.

Lone Rider in Soul Sisters is kinda cute.

Summary Dismissal is potentially sideboardable.

Wharf Infiltrator in a dredge archetype seems sweet.

Additionally, I'm going to speculate on Geier Reach Sanctum.

The one issue is you can't run Become Immense or Hooting Mandrills in the build so well... Yet not having immense seems kinda lackluster honestly.

So many goodies.

Mono-U Tron gets Imprisoned in the Moon.

Zoo gets Gnarlwood Dryad.

Eldritch Evolution replaces Collected Company in Chord Toolbox combo decks and separates itself from the more utility, value beat down style builds that would want to keep CoCo. I think it eventually gets banned.

SOI block in general has pumped up anlotnof tribes and while most might not have gotten enough to hit the competitive scene, spirits, vampires, and zombies are really making strides in that direction. Each got premier one drops (though vamps may be more build specific) in Mausoleum Wanderer, Falkenrath Gorger, and Cryptbreaker respectively.

Tamiyo, Field Researcher would be banned if she was only two colors. As it stands, she's still busted when you can play her but it'll be less consistent. I don't know whether or not that drops her out of modern playability altogether.

Geier Reach Sanitarium isn't super flashy but it innocuously powerful in that it could be in any deck. There's some chatter about pseudo-locking the opponent out of the game with Spirit of the Labyrinth or some effect of that nature.

Bedlam Reveler is stupidly powerful and plays nicely alongside Thing in the Ice  Flip. The two could come together to do nasty things and with the Thing seeing more play in U/R storm decks, I imagine players will be experimenting with this guy.

Sigarda's Aid looks like a bulk rare but I'd keep my eye on it. Hexproof swords could be a thing.

Unsubstantiate and Summary Dismissal seem very niche but powerful enough to fill those niches even in modern.

Grim Flayer could see play in Jund and even reshape it. The Flayer could also spawn a legitimate BUG midrange deck which may include Counterbalance.

Splendid Reclamation has a unique and very powerful effect. It looks like the kind of card that could get broken but I haven't seen it yet. Most variants I've seen go for some conglomeration of dredge and Scapeshift and I don't think it's better than either so we'll see where it ends up.

Lastly, Thalia, Heretic Cathar is BFFs with... herself (Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and flip flops with the old Thalia by punishing what old Thalia did not. Aggro, Tron, midrangey decks. Between the two of them, they just have such an effect on modern and she could even see play in Legacy D&T.

We'll see what eventually makes the cut for modern but I'm keeping my eye on these.
