Faith's Shield against infinite combos

Ok I'm almost certain this works but I would like verification. Is it possible to play faith's shield in response to an infinite damage combo (such as the izzet combo and murderous redcap/melira combo) whenever your life gets below five, call out the color and completely stop their combo? If so why aren't more people sideboarding it?

Their combo will still be in play. Having a removal spell or other disruption lets you stop the combo as well, but without dropping below 5 or leaving them with stuff in play. Also, the Shield does not work against Twin.

Vines of Vastwood does the same thing (targeting their combo piece) for less mana and fewer conditions.

I can see what you are getting at but I dont think its worth it. Realistically the Melira deck will fetch their Kitchen Finks first as it is much easier to get out than redcap. A, its fetchable with Collected Company B, you can cord for it on turn 3-4 no problem. This gives them infinite life which is something the majority of decks can not deal with. If you do not concede there then they are able to scry their damage win con to the top of their deck via Viscera Seer. On the off chance they are able to go for the damage combo first you are just delaying the combo until the next upkeep as they are able to combo at instant speed. I think you would be better off with some graveyard hate as sideboard tech rather than Faith's Shield vs the melira decks and Abrupt Decay and Vines of Vastwood (among other things) are great vs twin.

I use Shields but more often than not they're used to protect my own cards rather than shutting down an opponent's combo. They're great against RDW decks and late game alpha strikes.
