Filter Lands In Modern
Modern forum

Hey everyone,
I've recently been finding interest in filter lands and just had a few questions on them before I buy some.
Why haven't I seen more of these over my years of playing? They seem pretty good, especially if just running 2 or 3 in a deck.
Is there any possible way I could slid one or two of these bad chads into a burn deck? I know, the chances of it being my only land in my opening hand are high.
Are they worth it?

They're used for support, but people generally don't like relying on them in any format because they require another land in order to produce colored mana. They only tap for colorless on their own.

They are good in 3-4 color decks where you have alot of double costs like or
to cast out things a little easier.
Other than that not so much.

That's where I was guessing they would be played Caligula and zyphermage. Control decks and 3-4 colors. I can't remeber seeing anyone playing them. Yeah, it'd be a pretty bad day if it was the only land you drew Epochalyptik. That's why I asked around 2 copies, but there is always that chance, I suppose.

Even in two colour decks running a single copy is super unlikely to harm you but the benefit will be very low.

I don't kow if I'd run it in 2 color, ChiefBell. I just think there's other land cards that set up a great mana base for 2 colors to the point where there really isn't a point in them. Fetch lands, shock lands, quick lands, the innistrad lands. It's in 3 color decks and up where you have cards that cost double one color that I see their true potential.

Personally I need a Twilight Mire in place of my Flooded Grove for my gifts deck, and it would help immensely to cast out things like Eternal Witness and Damnation

I ran a single Cascade Bluffs and Mystic Gate in my American modern control deck for awhile and never regretted it. I was also running 3 cryptic commands and 1 kiki-jiki. It also helped for having Anger of the Gods in the side and Wrath of God, the double white for if I saw too much islands or mountains of course.

You can play two, maximum. I'd only play it if you have Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker alongside multiple Cryptic Commands in your Twin deck, or if you're playing Kiki-Control. Scapeshift also consistently runs 1-2 Flooded Grove.
The issue in general is that you don't want to rely on other lands, but in decks like the above you have very stringent mana costs and can satisfy the mana requirement for the filterland very consistently. Scapeshift in particular often uses the blue filterlands to fuel Gigadrowse out of the sideboard.

I'd have to agree GlistenerAgent. The only places I've seen them are kiki control. Well, pretty much any kiki deck is where I've seen them...
And as stated, it couldn't hurt much to run one in a burn deck, but the benefit doesn't seem to be there.

Invisible_Stalker I have to disagree with u completely. For instance I run Phyrexian Obliterator & Treetop Village in the same deck. Twilight Mire can mean the difference in either coming online a turn later... I also run 8 fetches.

Yeh I am also familiar with BG decks running Twilight Mire

Yeah decks that try using double-triple color symbols of 2 colors could use them. An example would be Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Cryptic Command.
