Getting into modern

Modern forum

My friend and I have been looking to get into modern after being prettymuch isolated to standard since starting to play the game. The problem is, with spending so much on my standard decks I don't have much of a budget for modern. I was wondering what is a fun competitive deck I could play in modern without having to take out a loan. I've been playtesting the simic infect deck and I like that but I'd like to hear about others. Thanks in advance

there are red deck wins variants that can do well in the format and depending on budget (say 100ish) and without fetches you may be able to build a decent affinity aggro deck. also, GR aggro much like the standard build may have some potential as it will also have access to lightning bolt and a few others.

Ya I have no fetches and don't exactly have the budget for them. I'll look around for decklists that catch my fancy

Infect is very good. Affinity can be built on the cheap side as well as goblin or rdw

Start on MTGsalvationfor your snooping. BTW, if you get into modern you will eventually have to buy fetches. I hate paying huge amounts of money but I shelled out 120$ for 3 Vendilion Cliques because I needed them. Its gross I know but inevitable.

doesn't a good rdw deck be one of the decks with the most fetches? The hatebear white weenie decks can be effective at times.

I've looked at a RDW list for <50$. It seemed quite good, so I'll doing some testing with that

RDW is definatly the cheapest most efficient deck for an unknown meta. Any other deck, especially hatebears, requires specific meta consideration.

The good news is you've got the shocks already if you've spent a lot of money on standard recently.

I'd have to second RDW/Goblins as being a good option. The burn spells are quick and dirty commons and uncommons, and the goblin lords are fairly inexpensive. It's all your six dollar rare one drops that'll get you. Maybe look into some Kuldotha Red variants. It used to get by on commons and uncommons from my memory.

Soul sisters is also a cheap option if red isn't your cup of tea.

Thanks for all the help guys. I looked into both RDW and Soul Sisters and they both seem like great decks. I will be playtesting a lot of modern with my buddy in the next couple of days so I will see which I prefer and hopefully be able to locate the cards to build it

Other cheap decks in modern that are competitive are mono green or U/G pump infect, and the Eggs combo decks.

My advice is don't get into modern, its going to be just as expensive as legacy will be and its 1/8th the fun of legacy.

If you like your games to last longer than turn 2 or three play modern, then you get to play turn four. Maybe even turn five..,

I almost always play tempo bant or a form of cawblade. And with cawblade the games go very long in the mirror and pretty long with everything else. As it is jminute most games go past turn 5 anyways because a lot of good has to happen for such short games but just a little bad can make them into much longer, swinger and IMO fun games. Most opponents pack some interaction to keep things from going off and it works most of the time so it happens quite a bit.

living end decks are fun and relatively cheap. mana base can be nasty, but same with all decks. just get the scars lands, only need three mana to run anyway.

Mono-Blue Tron has been making top 8s all over the place and can be built for dirt-cheap. Your most expensive cards are probably Solemn Simulacrum and Draining Whelk...
