Getting started in Modern
Modern forum

Fellow Players, I've just gotten back into Magic after stopping in 1996 for college. Thanks to the help of the users here, I have a standard deck that is fun to play, and allows me to play on Fridays. I would love to be able to play Modern here on other days, but I'm concerned about the cost of entry deck wise. Is it possible to build a modern deck that is affordable, yet stands a chance of winning matches? I'm not worried about winning tournaments, just having a chance of winning matches occasionally. If anyone has any advice on how to approach building a modern deck, or if you know of budget modern decks here on tapped out that you could link to, I would really appreciate it. I have browsed the decks myself, but I don't know enough about magic to separate the good from the bad.
Thank you in advance!

Well I would prefer to not spend more than $100 to $125 at first. To clarify, I would love to be able to start a deck for around $100 even if it is not it's best, then as I play it, and if it is fun to play, I'm willing to add cards to improve the deck. I would hate to shell out several hundred for a deck, only to then want to switch it up and end up having to spend another couple hundred at once again. I guess it's easier to spend money over time as opposed to breaking the bank right at the start. Thanks!

Well, UTron is a good place to start if you have a control background.
RDW in most forms fits for the aggro players.
It really depends on what type of player you are i suppose.

As a new player (I actually played back in the 90's, but I'm basically a new player) I'm open to anything. My standard decks are Rakdos and Undead, but I'm always up for trying new styles of play. I really don't have enough experience to say I am for one color or build over another. I will check out the deck you linked. Thanks so much!

MTGtop8.com is a good resource to look up deck archetypes. My suggestion is find something in the format that you like and tweak it until you have something you want to play with. Mono colored decks will almost always be cheaper and soul sisters is another good deck to look into.

we stand as one is a fun deck to play, i have run weaker versions of this deck and had a god time doing it, it surprised and amused people and threw them off enough to win.

Most Tron variants, RDW, Infect variants, and U/R Storm are all inexpensive and can be built for under $200. Usually less if you don't use fetches.

sylvannos I'll look into those builds. I have never played blue,(except for when I was in high school in the 90's, but I have forgotten everything since then) so I will most likely look into those for a change of pace. Ohthenoises posted a tron deck that looks fun. I will probably start there! Thanks!

As a side note sylvannos most Tron usually don't run fetches by default.

What is your definition of affordable? $50-$100? $101-$150? Etc.
