Good sit-and-wait deck?

Modern forum

Hey so, here's a rundown. I play with some friends who happen to be extraordinarily good at Magic, at least compared to me. A lot of the times our matches end up being really unfun, at least for me in particular, so I get discouraged really quick but I like the concept of Magic so much obviously that I wanna come back and keep playing still. So does anyone have any suggestions on a good deck to build, or at least good concepts, that isn't too cost heavy on both cmc and money? My group has a 60-card limit rule so I'm not looking to go above that many cards.

What I currently have if it helps to know what I could work with are a life-gain/leech deck, discard/when opponent has no cards in hand deck, lesson/learn Strixhaven deck, Myr/Thopter token generator deck, destroy all creatures deck, swampwalk/turn opponent's lands into swamps deck, and a deck that allows me to attach equipment straight to creatures by skipping cmc.

I'm not sure exactly at this point the most efficient way of turning these decks into good defend and wait for someone to swing at me decks, but I've tried for a long time now to fix these decks and add different ways of doing things to them and they always get obliterated and I'm starting to become really frustrated. Thanks for any help!

I know you’ve listed this under “modern”, but some of your commentary makes me think that this might not be the format being played?

So, some questions:

  • what format/rules do your group play by?
  • is it 1v1 magic or some kind of multiplayer game?
  • what is your budget?
  • what kinds of cards do your opponents commonly play?

This isn't tournament-level modern, but it's hella fun:

Why not ask your playgroup to look at your decks and see what you can improve?

But mono red burn is probably the best budget deck in any format

•What format of play are you and your friends participating in?

•What decks do they use (what cards do they include? Dont need all of them, but if you can take pictures or remember names, I can give more accurate aid)?

•How much are you willing to spend (budget) / is the group okay with proxying cards for playtesting?

As for style of decks that revolve around life manipulation and discard effects, there are decks that play like that in most every "eternal format" -(formats that never rotate, cards only get added or banned for powerlevel reasons). The format you play within would help with suggesting which deck archetype to use, and the cards itd employ.

Looking at the decks you have here your decks seem very gimmicky and don't have any rhyme or reason.

Here is the deck list for this years challenger decks. The decks go for around $25 if you want to pick one up and have a solid deck. But at a minimum you can look at these and see how decks should be built.

I suspect the deck power levels aren't well aligned. As others have mentioned, if we could get deck or card examples from the other decks, that would help.

If your group is all using tournament decks, have you asked them if they could build a more casual deck?

The discard deck you mention has potential to be good 8-Rack, which is unfortunately sort of bottoming out right now. The equipment deck has potential to be Hammer Time, which quick-equips Colossus Hammer for big damage and is very popular. Both decks have tournament pedigree.

I just skimmed the decks on your page. For the Hammer Time deck, start with Sigarda's Aid , Steelshaper's Gift , and Stoneforge Mystic for reliability.

There aren't any over-the-top swamp walk creatures aside from Sheoldred, Whispering One , but it looks like a fun casual deck. Mire Boa needs a home in that one, along with a full set of Evil Presence and at least one more Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth or more land search cards, like Sylvan Scrying .

High-level Myr/Thopter lives by the Sword of the Meek + Thopter Foundry combo, with a side of Time Sieve .

This deck is nothing like the ones you describe having, but it's my favorite 'sit and wait' deck as you almost never cast anything on your turn and keep the other person second-guessing themselves to a maddening degree.
