A fair absence of black - but the current meta is unkind to classics like Liliana of the Veil and Dark Confidant.

Loving that Birthing Pod once again showed its dominance after people doubted its relevance after Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time exploded in the format. I think Lantto's first place list was pretty innovative for playing no combo whatsoever. I have taken his list into consideration for how I will play my deck already. I love the mainboarding Thoughtseize, but I think the Spike Feeder/Archangel combo is too good to not include.
The meta could be more diverse, but at least Treasure Cruise isn't dominating, it only changed the dominant decks in modern. Wouldn't call it an extremely healthy meta, but it could be much worse - I don't see anything getting banned next year. Just my two cents.

I'm curious about the number of Siege Rhino's in those decks. Any stats there?
December 15, 2014 11:54 a.m.
11 Copies of Treasure Cruise in the top-7... (23 in top 16)
11 Copies of Gitaxian Probe in the top-7... (23 in top 16)
11 Copies of Lightning Bolt in the top 7... (31 in top 16)
12 Copies of Serum Visions in the top-5... (32 in top 16)
.....
I fail to see how 23 copies of a card in the top 16 is warranted as being "worrisome".
It has the same showing as Gitaxian Probe.

Seems like most Pod decks have decided to stick with 2 for now. Some of the heavier combo decks run 1, and some of the heavier aggro style decks run 3, but usually it's 2 Rhinos and 1-2 Restoration Angels.

Rayenous - I should clarify. I'm not worried personally, but some members of the community aren.

Lots of combo decks placing, very little black. I dont like it. But the meta seems pretty healthy on a whole. Would definitely like to see control decks get their foot in the door.

I dislike the lack of black but you can't have it all. Mainly I posted this to publish how the meta seems to be doing ok; that the delver craze is dying down; and that the jeskai ascendancy panic doesn't seem to be wholly founded.

I'm interested to see how many Jeskai ascendency decks went to time or how long they took in general. I don't worry about the card being banned because it is overpowered or anything. I worry that it may end up being like second sunrise or divining top where the amount of time it takes to play the deck is bad for the format.

I'm kinda surprised there isn't a single Twin list. Overall seems fairly healthy, but I'm a little concerned at the complete lack of control.

Ban Birthing Pod nao plz.
It's interesting to see no Scapeshift in the Top 16. I imagine the poor Ascendancy matchup and 50-50 Delver matchups just went the wrong way.
I think I'd be kind of OK with no bannings given these results. Jeskai Ascendancy is still rather suspect, but we should be able to adapt.
December 15, 2014 3:18 p.m.
Ascendancy is a control deck with a combo finisher. It is basically control.
I think control is finding it hard because trading 1-for-1 with counterspells isn't good enough anymore when your opponent can just draw 4 in a single turn.

I'd agree with that. Aggro-control is control's worst matchup, and there is a great deal of that going around right now. Scapeshift is the only true control deck capable of winning because it has a combo-kill. It's pretty hard to win in Modern right now by just grinding things out, so you need explosiveness like Pod or Ascendancy or Delver.
December 15, 2014 3:22 p.m.
Sorry, I keep being ninja'd.
Pod only has 3 appearances in there. Also this is a fairly new version of pod. It's just 'midrange: the deck'

I don't think I'm a fan of cutting any combo-kill entirely from the deck. As I mentioned, it's very difficult to win games unless you have access to explosiveness in the form of either a combo kill or having Pod in play. When the deck doesn't have that, I don't see it being able to keep up with many strategies.
That said, he did the win the GP, so scoreboard I guess.
December 15, 2014 3:28 p.m.
Yeh haha. The evidence from this result would argue against that explosiveness point. We're all surprised sometimes.

Also, everyone please stahp using mtgtop8.com deck names. RUG Aggro is RUG Delver, UR Aggro is UR Delver, 4/5c Goodstuff is just Tribal Zoo.

Mmmmm... copypasta, with memesauce, and a touch of originalegano!
December 15, 2014 4:21 p.m.
Pod proved its mettle once again. I don't know what you're talking about with this whole "explosiveness" thing; Pod has been transforming into a midrange style for months, and it works.

It is very strong. I just feel that having access to the combo is very useful and (almost) free. Free wins are always nice.
December 15, 2014 4:56 p.m.
Every now and again the combo does just give you an insta-win.

The Finals match was really interesting as it was a Pod mirror, but I think the games weren't really great. G3 was definitely sad for the Italian, but if he got a Birthing Pod it would've been game. The match was definitely decided on bad draws but I guess it was just made worse because of the mirror match.
December 15, 2014 5:11 p.m.
Yeh, I suppose that's often the case in the mirror though.
December 15, 2014 6:49 p.m.
23 Treasure Cruise sounds pretty few. My prediction of 50-60 Treasure Cruise was pretty bad prediction.

Treasure Cruise continues to be good but is not dominating the meta.... good I was a bit worried there. I love the new midrange goodstuff pod. Cool deck and fun to watch. Jeskai Ascendancy deserves some watching still but as of now, while good, it is not breaking the format as initially feared. The lack of black is the only diversity complaint but imo what it lacks in numbers it makes up for in effectiveness. Junk and junk pod are in a good place right now and Siege Rhino is amazing. All in all the format is looking good; much better than I had feared based on the initial post Khans trends

That looks like a pretty healthy meta to me. The 23 copies of Treasure Cruise is a little alarming, but other than that it seems like a good meta.
