I made this deck over 2 years ago from scratch off the top of my head long before HSA was an archetype... After playing it for two years and basically mastering it I can say that the deck works fine with 3 inkmoth. You need 4 citadel tho it's imperative

Darksteel is great for Mox Opal, but from what i’ve seen most scales decks don’t realistically get that online until turn 2/3 anyway, so it’s usually not super relavent. The important part of being an artifact-land is that Ravager can eat it. But for minimal investment, Ravager can eat Inkmoth also. I’ll conceed having to pay a mana to be food for Ravager isn’t ideal, but the free-wins that Inkmoth can provide has always been more useful to me than the benefits Darksteel has provided

wallisface honestly, with 4x mox opal, 4x darksteel citadel, 3-4x anamation module, 3x welding jar, it's quite reliable to get turn 1 active opals. secondarily, you also occasionally get steel overseer turn 1 from mox and land with welding jar giving mox metalcraft... and when this happens you're in highly advantaged, even against most removal since jar backs up your overseer.

TheLoneDart Yeah i’m not saying it doesn’t happen, just that scales decks don’t rely on opal as much as traditional affinity, and generally don’t get opal online T1.
Looking at your particular brew, you seem to have higher odds of T1 opal only because you’re running a much larger quantity of 0 and 1 drops, so this probably skews Darksteel in your favour. My own brew (which was also made well before scales got its fame, link below) runs a lot more 2 drops so doesn’t get the same value from opal, and hence why i’m preferring Inkmoth. I suspect the OPs decision might boil down to how speedy they expect their deck to function

glg3nstlftw do you have a list we can gander at? I’m always keen to see sweet robot builds

I’m currently only running 20 lands (alongside mox’s), they are:
2x Buried Ruin
4x Darksteel Citadel
7x Forest
2x Horizon Canopy
4x Inkmoth Nexus
1x Pendelhaven
If I had to drop either a Citadel or a Nexus, instead i’d look at finding a way to avoid doing so. Is the card it would be replacing better? Can you not bin another land instead? (I my case, i’d be ditching a Buried Ruin). Is there not some trivial non-land you can ditch instead? Those 8 lands are pretty awesome!!!
If I had to choose, probably the citadel. The inkmoth is sacable in the same fashion (just costs you a mana), and the citadel does a lot less as far as it ain’t a creature or wincon. But still, remove something else
