HELP - Planechase

Modern forum

I've tried googling various terms to get this question answered, but I've had no success.

My question is pretty simple: If a card was printed in a modern-legal set, and the card is not banned, could the planechase version be played legally, or does the card have to be from its modern counterpart?

I'm mostly just concerned over pricing. There are some planechase rares I'd like to get which have modern-legal counterparts, however the modern prices exceed $10 per card, whereas the planechase versions are significantly cheaper. I'd much rather spend $10 for a playset than $40.

Thanks

Im pretty sure Its allowed if your allowed to use the modern masters reprint in a tourney I dont see why not you cant use a planechase version of it. I mean heck they will allow a 7th ed. Llanowar Elves in standard if it got reprinted right?

I play an Archenemy Wall of Roots in my Melira Pod deck just because it has a modern border (the "Modern Legal" one is a Timeshifted card from Time Spiral). It works perfectly well.

So will any version of any card that was printed in a legal Modern set. Your Planechase version is fine.

Actually, come to think of it, the Scavenging Ooze I have in the same deck is from the Commander set rather than an M14 one. Again, it's legal.

Scavenging Ooze is only modern legal since m14 came. To be legal a card must have been printed in a set that is modern legal. The actual version of the card is not important, you could use an alpha Disenchant if you had one.

It's absolutely fine. Like Standard where you can use your M10 versions of Doom Blade in the format because it was reprinted for M14, formats can accommodate other printings of cards from, say, casual formats like Planechase or Archenemy as long as they as they are legal in your through at least one of its printings. So yeah, using the Commander printing of Scavenging Ooze is fine for use in the current Standard format.
