I was just thinking since Hero's Downfall is basically Murder made better if it would have a place in modern. I imagine it would since it allows you to deal with planeswalkers at instant speed but it also has a questionable cmc.

So you have a Doubling Season and you just played Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker ? That's cute.

I've been thinking so since he got spoiled, but the main issue might be the BB and the 3cmc cost. Dismember is strictly better for the phyrexian mana and the -5/-5 creature removal, which hits indestructible. In jund, do you want 2 or 3cmc when you flip it with bob? What can it replace in that? In my mind nothing. What about esper gifts? It could probably see a 1-2 of. Melira pod won't run it. Junk good stuff has Abrupt Decay and other things to deal with planeswalkers already. Other decks I'm not sure.

@gufymike that's basically what I was thinking, Dismember will be the competition. I can see decks running maybe 2 of each and sideboarding 1 each

I think one of the reasons we're seeing Hero's Downfall shoot up in price and played a lot in Standard is because of a lack of better cards or a more consistent mana base. Don't get me wrong, Hero's Downfall is an amazing card. But, I'd much rather play Dreadbore to deal with turn three Karn Liberated s or Liliana of the Veil s when I'm on the draw for my turn two. Having to wait that extra turn to get three mana open kinda hurts.
Plus, Maelstrom Pulse is a much more powerful card with more versatility.
I could be wrong. Instant vs. sorcery speed is a key factor. I'm just not sure how viable a one-for-one, three mana removal spell is for a turn four format.

I would think so. Modern has both creatures and planeswalkers.
