Hello all, I am tinkering with a few modern decks. I have found that a huge roadblock to a victorious game is an opponent playing an Abrupt Decay .

My questions are... Do many decks run this very powerful card? Kf so is there any counter play?

I think any that have the mana base to support it should and do run it. It's one of the best removal spells in modern.

It's quite a popular card in modern and can be played by a variety of decks.

Also the text explicitly says 'abrupt decay can't be countered' so no, there is no traditional counter to it. That's probably why it's so popular.

Great removal is great, and not much you can do to stop it. Some artifact (primarily affinity) decks run Welding Jar to stop decay and its ilk, but that probably doesn't work for you.

If you have white Gods Willing will "counter" it or a regenerate ability. Outside of those there isn't much you can do

For a second I was thinking Chalice of the Void could help but then I remembered it counters the spell.... Well damn if I was a mtg finance guy I'd be buying Abrupt Decay by the dozens

Considering it also sees Legacy play it would be a wise thing to do. Then hold them until Huey launches.

Thing is anagon, decay is one of the few removal cards that doesn't hit manlands, which are in a majority of decks, significantly reducing its playability.

True, but it blows up Lili, goyf, bob, and a lot of Pod's early crucial creatures.

I know why its good, I'm just saying why it isn't the best.

The verdict I am coming to after this thread is "you just have to fear it"

Yep, any deck in B/G is almost guaranteed to have it
