only rules are that it can't be double colour or higher than 2cmc without being an instant win

Chalice of the Void and Spellskite are great colorless choices as well. And Witchbane Orb for a more reliable Leyline in decks like RG Tron and Affinity.

Sorry

You can just use gatherer though

Dromoka's Command and Hallow are two that haven't been mentioned already.

Hallow is an oft overlooked card that functions very well in prolonging the game just long enough for your own win con to kick in, if you're playing aggressively enough yourself. It doesn't have the staying/stopping power of Kor Firewalker but it'll grab you some tempo and it's not .

Regardless of your stipulation Obstinate Baloth, Wurmcoil Engine, and Thragtusk all function very well in ramp decks where you aren't hurting yourself with your own land near as much as the quicker decks in the format.

get really cute and run Ruric Thar, the Unbowed. Works in R/G tron and amulet decks at least.

I've seen some people try Rest for the Weary.

asasinater13 I've actually done that. It's not really effective about 75% of the time, but when it works it's hilariously fun. I'm a sucker for big / dudes though.

I run him in bloom's sideboard for vs burn, delver, infect, basically any spell-heavy deck. also he wins in combat against decks like abzan and jund, while punishes their removal. he's done more work than I ever expected him to do.

much more viable for the deck that plays him turn two/three (bloom) than most, though.

Timely Reinforcements is three CMC, but with six life and threw blockers, it likely is enough to stabilize.

Non-White decks typically use Dragon's Claw or Spellskite. Spellskite seems weird, but losing 2 life to redirect the spell is better than taking 3 to the face.

Burrenton Forge-Tender prevents a little for decks that can't rely on heavy-white options.

Dragon's Claw made me very sad to see.

Hallow has worked for some Zoo players.

Dispel is the most versatile card that also beats Burn. It's so efficient that it wins both the Burn matchup and the midrange/blue matchups by letting you resolve what matters.

I have a friend who uses Brindle Boar because it gets to declare block and then sac to gain four, so it usually saves 2 life and then gains 4 more.

What about Worship for the decks that have things that burn can't deal with?

June 22, 2015 3:01 p.m.

I think it's a bit too slow. Firewalker is probably a better option for decks that can play white.

tyforthevenom says... #20

i was just thinking of decks that can splash white but can't afford

June 22, 2015 3:04 p.m.

I don't think you'd splash white just for Worship though. There are enough on-color or colorless hate cards to use regardless of what you're playing.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned: Duress and Inquisition of Kozilek

Ye, discard will do you good.

TurboFagoot says... #24

Tarmogoyf? Best way to beat burn is by presenting a sizable clock. You can gain all the life you want, but it's really meaningless without something pressuring them, as their topdecks will eventually just kill you.

June 22, 2015 4:55 p.m.

vishnarg says... #25

TurboFagoot, that's not true. Most important thing against Burn or any aggressive strategy is to stabilize as fast as possible. If you manage to gain 5-10 life against Burn, you should buy yourself enough time to present your win condition without fear of dying before you can use it. Sure, pressure is great, but stalling through life gain is the best way to beat a red deck.

June 22, 2015 5:11 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #26

Yeah I have often found that they can't recover from sizeable lifegain whether you have a clock or not. I have beaten them to death with a 2/2 scooze before they've managed to topdeck enough burn to be a threat after gaining just a little life.

TurboFagoot says... #28

That's what stabilizing is though, getting control of the game. i.e. a threat/your deck's gameplan. I've seen Burn decks win after an opponent had gained 20 life.

I'm not saying life gain isn't good, but a hand of two lands and five Feed the Clans (Whatever) isn't necessarily going to beat the deck. More goes into winning the matchup than putting a few cards that say "Gain X Life" into your sideboard.

June 22, 2015 5:38 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #29

No sure. But even the smallest of creatures alongside a few feeds is going to do you pretty well.

June 22, 2015 5:39 p.m.

If you're a combo deck, all you need is lifegain. If you're not, your job is sometimes a bit harder because you have to deploy a threat and stop their burn at the same time. Tarmogoyf does that, though, at least against the creatures.

June 22, 2015 5:43 p.m.

TurboFagoot says... #31

I disagree given the presence of Skullcrack/Command. Kor Firewalker is so good because it stops the repeatable sources of damage (Creatures) and is hard to Skullcrack effectively for the lifegain. (Though, perhaps ironically, Skullcrack + blocked creature kills Firewalker) But any other card that solely gains life is pretty susceptible to the burn cards. Sometimes they have it, sometimes they don't, but you really just can't rely on big bursts of life gain to win.

June 22, 2015 5:45 p.m.

TurboFagoot says... #32

If you're a combo deck shouldn't your job be to go off faster than Burn?

June 22, 2015 5:46 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #33

I much prefer to rely on multiple small bursts for that very reason. The threat of Skullcrack is very real. As is Atarka's Command.

Lots of things like Kitchen Finks, Timely Reinforcements, Feed the Clan etc, all mixed together.

June 22, 2015 5:47 p.m.

vishnarg says... #34

Obviously you need a win condition, but life gain is just more important against burn, that's all.

June 22, 2015 5:49 p.m.

Depends on what kind of combo deck. If you're all in, you don't have to do anything against burn except kill them. What I mean is the more grindy combo decks.

i've managed to beat a burn player with a Dryad Arbor before after i gained a little life it was quite funny
