I want to run a red deck wins in modern. I heard the game is expensive and that strategy wont work because of all the broken cards left in modern. Is any of this true?
RDW may do decent, I watched one against melira pod and affinity, it lost both matches but they were very close games. So RDW has potential, it is just a matter of finding which build will work best

Okay, here's the thing.
Mono-red is cheap to build, and effective in modern. I highly recommend netdecking, regardless of what people think, because it sounds like you want a winning deck and not a totally garbage Maze's End modern fog deck. People have lists that win everywhere.
Also modern is hardly broken - it's mostly a pile of fair cards Even half the banlist isn't broken - that would be legacy/vintage.

Well then I might get more bang for my buck as I know how red tends to work. I just want to use some of my cards that I have when they cycle out of standard.

It can be expensive, but so can standard. My advice is to save up and buy pieces of the deck a little at a time, since it's pretty close to an eternal format. That's what I'm doing for my legacy Affinity deck. It's nowhere near cheap, but it was the least expensive deck I could find that I liked. So that's my advice.

From the research I've been doing RDW seems pretty viable in modern, but RDW decks that splash for another color through fetches seem to do a lot better (but, you know, costs way more). What's great about either burn or RDW is that they really punish greedy mana bases since people are always fetching and sometimes shocking and so on.
Also when Jund plays Bob and I'm playing burn I feel all warm inside.

There isn't much expensive stuff in mono-red, so it's a good place to start for modern if you want to come in with a budget. All of the red-only staples pretty much have been printed many times in low rarities, the best example being Lightning Bolt . No need to invest in dual lands, or any expensive staples since all the dollar cards are either multicolour or not red (see Snapcaster Mage , Tarmogoyf and Dark Confidant ). Yes, you may be using the odd 9 dollar card but pretty much it's all dollar Rares and cheap commons/uncommons. Ash Zealot , Goblin Guide , Blood Moon and obviously bolt are all good places to start.

I made this deck out of boredom yesterday It's R/B and I say fairly competent. Damn Those Blood Suckers & Their Good Qualities :) I imagine someone actually familiar with Red cards could make something much better. So based on the 150$ price tag my deck has, I would say u could piece together a brutal modern deck for under 300$ little bit at a time. ...and I'd say realistically it probably cost even less.
My favorite modern deck, only runs about 100$ Sheoldred, Whispering One -†-BLΔCK-†- SΔCR‡F‡C3. In less than a month I'm about 5 cards away from actually owning the whole thingh, and to be honest the reason I don't have it all already is I've been foiling it out instead of buying the basic cards lol

Modern, Legacy and Vintage are very expensive formats to play if you want it to be a tournament worthy deck. If you are just playing with a group of friends or at a shop where people cannot support upwards of $700 for a deck then you will be fine.
On the upside, if you take an EDH approach, you can build the deck you want with similar cards, and overtime you can replace cards until you build your desired deck.
