So I h one of every archetype in modern... Except control, I'm terrible at self brewing control lists I can never balance lands answers and find a spot for a clock or two

Vish, problem with mtg top 8 is you can look on it and only find magic online daily winners, which means very little due to how often a random rogue deck that wins from luck more often than by being good

You want control and to break the meta at the same time - try UB Tezzla Coil Control! Superfriends artifact menagerie control FTW!

There is Grixis control: The Ultimate Cruelty
There is Jeskai Control: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid you can't do that.
There is Esper control: Lingering Control and a gifts variant A Little Lesson In Recursion Theory
There is Tron Mono Blue Tron
And those are the best archetypes, hope it helps!

I was just trying to help Obviously classically Jeskai is the best for pure control, but Grixis, Sultai, and even Boros enchantments have been known to do well in Modern. Esper is a bit lacking however.

i heard of "marsh control" on one of my fb groups and also awesomeguy37 if you ever do a mardu control brew name it "yes dave, even jeff, everybody is dead, everybody is dead dave."

There's 8rack. Not the best deck but it's a fun control deck that focuses on ripping cards from the opponents hand before they can even be cast. I have a rakdos list though the usual is mono black.
Racking it up if you want ideas here's my list.
February 19, 2015 12:57 p.m.
I don't have any of the lists, but Gifts Ungiven is pretty solid, as well as Scapeshift decks
February 19, 2015 1:02 p.m.
My personal list is my Modern Caws list. It can function as a midrange deck and a control deck and has enough leeway for interchanging parts that it can become aggro as well

I've been messing around with this Modern Loam Assault list. It's hard to play sometimes, but it's fun.

i've been convinced into Faeries control ft Splinter Twin (main win is control and win with fearies secondary win is combo off)

On a related note, do you all think UW Control is viable? Along the lines of previous standards UW Control except with more of the modern type stuff like Cryptic Command, Wall of Omens, Batterksull, etc.

UWR is a lot better. Lightning Bolt and Lightning Helix are stacked.

Dalektable UW control is a thing-ish but splashing red is just so beneficial with Lightning Bolt, Lightning Helix and Electrolyze.

UW Giest is solid, The whole Tzu Ching Kuo deck.
I mean you can look at mine but Jex's is pretty good and has already been linked.

My control deck is the control deck that will pierce the heavens. awesomeguy37 was being an awesome guy and linking the most loved control decks on this site.
On colours of control, it's safe to say that 3 colours is strictly better than 2, and 4 colours is definitely worth considering, too. It's a control deck, so you have time to screw around and get good mana. UWRb is looking the most solid in terms of competitive play, but cases can be made for plain UWR.

JexInfinite I was thinking of splashing in my Cruel Control deck for Path to Exile, Restoration Angel, Supreme Verdict and Lingering Souls. Do you think it is worth it?
February 20, 2015 4:51 a.m.
Hjaltrohir says... #23
bijschjdbcd ok, what black cards could be splashed into UWR then?
February 20, 2015 5:08 a.m.
JexInfinite says... #25
No, you splash for Tasigur, Lingering Souls and maybe some other niche meta cards.
Extirpate, Murderous Cut and Dreadbore are not very good. Terminate is alright, but not where you want to be.
February 20, 2015 5:33 a.m.
bijschjdbcd says... #28
With Black as a splash it isn't actually that good.

Crackling Doom isn't particularly great at the moment. It's unnecessary for a lot of games, and a lot harder to cast than things which improve specific matchups. It does screw over Infect a bit, but since you're playing UWRb, you have heaps of removal anyway.
Slaughter Games is definitely worth playing if you have a lot of combo decks in the meta.
Thoughtseize is not where you want to be with a splash. We have Vendilion Clique, anyway.
February 20, 2015 6:51 a.m.
Hjaltrohir says... #30
JexInfinite The problem of course is that v-clique is like $70.
Terminate is better in Grixis control then splashing for UWR.

JexInfinite says... #31
awesomeguy37 Yeah, but the whole deck is about $1100, so it's nothing bank-breaking. It's $600 less than Abzan.
However, you need a whole binder for sideboard cards. You need to do a lot of sideboard work.

Scapeshift is by far the best control deck, don't be convinced by these silly brews and jeskai control decks. Scapeshift can dominate vs burn and junk if you build the deck correctly, and has the versatility to beat most every deck in the format. If you are good at it, it's virtually impossible for a counter spell-based control deck to win. On top of that, it can combo off fast if you get a little luck. Turn 4 is the earliest you can combo off, although turn 5-7 is more common.
Here is a good decklist, but you are going to need to do some serious editing to improve it for the burn matchup: http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/18-05-14-scapeshift-jun-young-park

but i've already ordered playsets of every faerie card aswell as a set of twin lightning bolt terminate forked bolt and cryptic commands (sold a box of zendikar i managed to trade for last year and was saving for a chaos draft)
February 20, 2015 10:42 a.m.
Faeries are not very good in modern, I would cancel your orders ASAP. Always play test extensively before ordering new cards, that's what I do.
February 20, 2015 11:11 a.m.
tyforthevenom says... #35
It's faerie twin, all those enter the battlefield effects are useful but twin enables them and to top it off you have an infinite combo, red helps the list, was up all night testing, and my opponents really hated "upkeep I'll tap all your lands"
February 20, 2015 11:26 a.m.
tyforthevenom says... #36
Every turn* twin made it so I could lock them out of the game
February 20, 2015 11:27 a.m.
Ohhh, a splinter twin deck? That's different than control, but it's definitely a good deck. My mistake.
If you really wanted to play like a control deck, hen scapeshift is your deck, but splinter twin is still a great deck.
February 20, 2015 11:42 a.m.
tyforthevenom says... #38
It's at it's core fae control but splashing for twin and other bits

Tiktacy Cruel Control and Esper Gifts are not 'silly brews' and Jeskai Control is widely acknowledged as the premier control deck in modern. Scapeshift used to be good. After bannings it is seeing very little play. Im not saying its bad, but it isnt the top control deck. Also, Faeries is just fine in Modern, its not going to win you the protour but it can place highly at FNM.
February 20, 2015 1:16 p.m.
Silly brews is a little harsh, but most experienced people will tell you that in the current metagame, jeskai control is not going to be top tier. Jeskai wins premier tournaments because it is versatile and can be shaped for specific meta games, but counter spells and lightning bolts are not the way to go right now. It wins when the time is right essentially. I would say that esper has a better chance at being successful right now though. However, scapeshift has the ability to win with a single card on the spot, and against the efficient and tempo-heavy junk decks running around, this is crucial to be successful.

bijschjdbcd says... #42
Ahhh Tiktacy, Jeskai Control is hardly unplayable in the current metagame, The very way you build the deck is based on the metagame, It isn't the best deck against Burn but it has reasonably good matchups against the rest of the field.
And Scapeshift is hardly the better deck, Its completely matchup dependent.
February 20, 2015 5:26 p.m.
JexInfinite says... #43
Tiktacy Scapeshift was better when Dig Through Time was around, but only marginally, because control players were tuning their sideboards. Without Dig, Scapeshift is a good deck, but really can't compare to Jeskai and all its power. If Dig were unbanned, I'm pretty sure Scapeshift would be worse than Jeskai, just because of the amazing sideboard.
