I'd like to talk about burn and color splashing
Modern forum

More specifically, is white a requirement because of Boros Charm? I am part of an MTG fb group and someone was talking about making a deck for modern, and asked if mono r burn or white weenie would be good. Someone(they will stay unnamed) said go burn and then listed this: Naya burn>Boros burn>mardu burn>mono r burn>white weenie. I then asked about gruul(I am using gruul as I don't have a naya base yet) and their response was: "No. If your running burn and splash a color(s) and it's not white, you're an idiot. He goes on to say that boros charm is the second best burn card, then bring up PtE, deflecting palm, and kor. He even added that there aren't any logical reasons to run less optimal cards(much later he finally admits having a budget could be a good reason) My question to you all is: Is he right? He was pretty douchey in his comments so I wasn't inclined to hear his advice. I let him know he sounded like an elitist spike and he said that was a compliment for him. Then added he knew what he was talking about since he was headed to whatever GP with naya burn. Sorry that was a bit of a rant.

From what I know of burn, Kor Firewalker is essential to the mirror matchup. Boros Charm is also a great burn spell, though I'd say it's the third best.
That guy sounds like a total dick though. Sorry you had to deal with him

Unfortunately he was right because he sounds like an ass hole.

That dude sounds just like a blast(much sarcasm intended). He is right though, on how burn is in modern. Naya is the best, since you get access to Atarka's Command, Boros Charm and the great sideboard card of Destructive Revelry.
To really answer your first question, yes, if you want the most efficient burn deck in modern. Without the white splash, you'll just end up running suboptimal cards that increase your goldfish turn. You also lose access to all the big sideboard cards.
On a side note, something I have not really seen is Jund burn. That kinda sounds neat, but still, lack of white is really what would make that not as good.

People play Jund burn with Tasigur and SB Self-Inflicted Wounds. Bump is in there too.

Alright, thanks for the quick responses(and how polite : p)
Another question: say I want to toss white into my gruul? I have 4 Boros charms but little else. I could get Deflecting Palm and Kor Firewalker but as far as lands go I only have 2 foundry and 2 retreats(only fetches in the deck are 2 foothills) What would you all consider to be the lowest functioning naya manabase? My current non naya base includes:2 stomping, 2 foothills, 4 copperline, 2 wolf run, and 10 basics-budgety I know.

GlistenerAgent, I've actually been testing Jund burn with Painful Truths and it works pretty well.
As for the mana base, I'm not sure. You really need fetches. I would go:
2 foothills
2 stomping ground
2 sacred foundry
4x clifftop retreat
4x copperline
6x mountains

Yeah, I saw some people discussing that. I think it has similar problems to Day's Undoing, and the deck is already a bit clunkier to start.

I feel Browbeat would be better than Painful Truths in burn.

Browbeat is also terrible in burn. I don't think Painful Truths would be worth it, unless Jund burn is super grindy, but I don't think a burn deck should have to be grindy.

I hear it's terrible all the time but playing against it has proven otherwise.

I guess so.. It also depends on the type of deck you play to. Against a whole field of different decks, it's bad, but against certain decks, I can see how they are good.

White also gives access to Lightning Helix and spot removal like Path to Exile.

So I guess I need some heaths to make naya work. I'll get there eventually ; p
Heaths now? Or after rotation?
December 6, 2015 2:35 p.m.
To be honest, they aren't gonna go down even with rotation. Not much anyway. And after that they're just gonna climb continuously until they're reprinted 5-6 years from now. Haha

I have about 2900 puca points I could use for 2 heaths(I was saving it for a second guide but I'll just buy 2 with my tax return in a few months) Scytec
December 6, 2015 3:34 p.m.
Goblin Guide? And maybe, depends on your priorities. Do you have a tournament you're trying to make or something? Or do you just wanna Rahe your gruul burn and turn it into Naya?

Scytec, yes goblin guide lol. And I'm not prepping for anything. Just want a solid(quick enough) burn/aggro type deck for fnm whenever I get a Friday off. And I'd like to turn it to naya as it is best. Just need the manabase and Lightning Helix if I opt to use it.
December 6, 2015 3:46 p.m.
Fair enough. Helix isn't terribly expensive...that mana base sucks though. That's the problem with decks like this though...Blood Moon seems to be really popular lately. Be careful with any red decks you play against.

you could go R/B for access to Bump in the Night and Blightning. You also get access to black's spot removal

Hallowed_Titan says... #23
Not interested in black splash really. Blood Moon is a real pain but not auto loss thanks to Destructive Revelry, Back to Nature, and Wear / Tear.

Well, he's right about that much. Boros Charm is very, very good in the deck. The sideboard cards are crucial as well.
That said, RG is fine, but your sideboard will be relatively crappy as far as Burn SBs go.
