ok It's a given Thoughtseize is the best of these discard cards. But when you don't want to give up $200+ on a playset, you look towards Inquisition of kolzilek as the next best one and replacement. Now, I get that the 3cmc or less is for any non-land card. Which is nice, it hits Tarmogoyf , Dark Confidant , infect creatures and a few other things that Duress doesn't, because Duress is limited to noncreature/nonland discards.
So what spells are out there that duress can get that IoK can't in modern? Cryptic Command ,comes to mind, but what else?
Yes, I'm trying to make an argument for Duress over spending 30$ on a playset of IOK at this time and give other players on a budget the options that matter.
Honestly, it all depends on your deck. Duress does hit things like Elspeth, Knight-Errant and other bombs but Inquisition of Kozilek just hits more that are effective early on like Geist of Saint Traft , every sword, Maelstrom Pulse , Liliana of the Veil etc. true, duress hits most of these too, but inquisition is just better in my opinion. Duress can't get Archbound Ravager, Dark Confidant , Tarmogoyf , etc. A lot of modern is set in 3 drops and below. But it is all a matter of opinion lol

For modern, virtually interchangeable 90-95% of the time, but you have to be willing to accept that some small percentage of that time you'll get screwed out of not getting to discard what you want.

I don't think Thoughtseize is much better than Inquisition of Kozilek if it's better at all. This is because most of the modern cards used are 3cmc or less anyway, so generally you're going to choose one of them anyway, and you'll save yourself 2 life and $70. The only real thing you'd be tossing is an Ajani Vengeant . Other 4cmc or higher stuff includes Cryptic Command , and Obstinate Baloth well... Who'd discard one of them?

Here's the short list of the most likely spells you'll see that you can't force them to discard. A lot of them are just value cards, but there are a few like Birthing Pod which is the core of the deck's it is in.
Thundermaw Hellkite , Ajani Vengeant , Batterskull , Olivia Voldaren , Elspeth, Knight-Errant , Thrun, the Last Troll , Restoration Angel , Sun Titan , Supreme Verdict , Baneslayer Angel , Phyrexian Metamorph , Birthing Pod , Murderous Redcap , Sigarda, Host of Herons , Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker , Glen Elendra Archmage , Hero of Bladehold , Spectral Procession - counts as 6 CMC -, Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite , Gifts Ungiven , Wrath of God , Platinum Angel , Solemn Simulacrum , Sundering Titan , Wurmcoil Engine , Mindslaver , Splinter Twin , Primeval Titan , Scapeshift , Emrakul, the Aeons Torn , Griselbrand , Through the Breach , Fury of the Horde , Karn Liberated , - basically every card in Living End decks, Ghor-Clan Rampager .

IoK is the best forced discard card in modern. Thoughtseize, to me just seems like a waste of money, and I own a couple! The point is that you should just accept the fact that you may have to drop 30 dollars for the inquisitions. It's better than 200 dollars on a "meh" card. A good piece of information involving the IoK is this: Most of the important cards in most modern decks are less than 3 CMC. Let that assure you for a second. It may be more important to Inquisition a dude and see their birthing pod in their hand. But it would be better to make sure they are not getting their Melira, Sylvok Outcast (to piece their infinite combo) anytime soon. You see what I mean

No Inquisition of Kozilek is not he bet discard in modern. Take Jund for example. It runs 2 copies and 3 Thoughtseize . Reason being Jund has a hard time against combo decks. Inquisition does hit 3 drops down (which is good) but it doesn't hit Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker , Splinter Twin and Scapeshift . Not to mention pod which is more important to hit if the don't have pieces of the combo in hand.

Price aside, Thoughtseize is the best discard for modern. No restrictions (besides lands) on what you choose, and the 2 life you pay is paltry compared to what you'll get rid of. After Thoughtseize , it's hard to say whether IoK or Duress are better, as it depends on the deck you're playing against.

I personally never had an issue with IoK. In the meta where I'm at, inquisition is more effective. Most people don't play decks with a curve hire than 4. I got looked down on for having my birthing pod deck top out at 7. That was until I got 2nd at a modern tourney. For me and what I see regularly, thought seize just seems too inefficient. So one sits in my sb for legacy and the other sits in my binder

I really think metas are different at shops. I've played at some ptq's and it was so diverse that Thoughtseize was the first card sold out at the vendor booth. Mainly cause they had them at 30 when they were at 50 but that's besides the point. Best discard spell in magic all formats is Thoughtseize followed by Hymn to Tourach then depends on the format whether its ioK or Duress . legacy wants Duress where modern wants ioK

True. Legacy benefits more from duress. It takes out FoW something fierce, which is always nice. It shreds sneak and show decks too. Inquisition is better in modern because, IMO, it trips up infect and storm decks. And can target any early game creatures.
