I have been durdling around the modern scene for quite a few months now testing out the waters. I have played a little Melpod, kikipod, 4-color burn (When deathrite was a thing) boros sisters, boros aggro tribal, and fiddled around with Mono-W taxes but all of those decks just lost my interest after a few weeks play and my play just became more sloppy hence my never seeming to play these decks right. I know I'm a midrange player. I like cards like Boros Reckoner smack face while keeping him armed with spells and what-not but my point I guess is there a way to get out of this slump? How do you find the perfect deck for your style? Is homebrew good enough to do and expect to go toe to toe with Tier 1 decks if built and played correctly? I'm thinking about just doing either a Skred deck wins with splash white then letting it be a boros midrange. What do you guys think?

That seems fun. Not sure i know how to pilot tron but I spose it would feel like my current Edh deck does. "Get all the mana, play all the things you can"

Essentially it's "assemble Tron ASAP, Drop Wurmcoil Engine or some other ridiculous fatty, win game."

I saw someone playing a UW version that controlled a bit more with a hybrid plan of gifts. How is that?

It's ok. I don't have any experience playing it but I know that it's weaker than Mono U and G/R but there are advantages to it. Iona, Shield of Emeria gets played in the U/W version sometimes.

The reason people play U/W Tron is that it's pretty good against everything. For example, G/R tron is VERY weak when there are few Thoughtseize decks in the format, because that's what it accels at. Pretty much every matchup is 45-55 or better for U/W tron. You also get to cast Gifts Ungiven for Unburial Rites and either Iona, Shield of Emeria or Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite .
Ohthenoises, I'd have to disagree with you. U/W tron gets it's power from versatility, rather than from replacability. While GR runs MORE of each effect, U/W runs, for example, 3 "oblivion rings" (Faith's Fetters , Detention Sphere , and Oblivion Ring ), then fetches all three with Gifts Ungiven alongside an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn . It's a different game plan, and accels in a different meta, but it certainly isn't a weaker deck. In fact, I'd argue that in the current meta, it's better than G/R.
UW Tron is my list, based pretty closely on LSV's.

NotSoLuckyLydia Most of my statement of "weaker than Mono U and G/R" was rooted firmly in the fact that I have absolutely terrible luck. I have to compensate for this by building for consistency. Because of Gifts Ungiven most U/W decks are full of 1xes, even more so than a normal tron list.
As I said, I have very little experience with U/W tron but from what I've seen of the top8s and other research it lags behind Mono U, whether that makes it better or worse? No idea. As for G/R, both U/W and U have a severe advantage over it just because of the counter magic that's present.
My wife just went undefeated last Saturday at our LGS with I Fight For the Users!. Seeing Boros Burn, Naya Maverick, and others.

Ohthenoises, you should have said you had bad luck with toolbox type decks. Though, to be fair, you have effectively 7 copies of wrath, 7 o-rings, and 11 counterspells.
While it's slower than either of those decks, the spells it casts are generally stonger spells. R/G has small damage spells and tops out with Karn, while U/W has straight up wraths and Iona/Elesh Norn.
Like I said, each deck has it's place, and it depends on your meta and playstyle. If you were looking to take one of these to a major tournament, however, U/W has the best matchups, as it's stronger against aggro and combo, Mono U has amazing matchups against combo, but R/G feeds on midrange, which is far less popular at the moment. (And Courser of Kruphix makes the matchup slightly worse.)
If your meta is mostly combo, mono blue is your best bet. But the midrange decks simply aren't as big a percentage of the meta anymore.

Toolbox no, having to hit a Gifts to get what I want, that's where I start having issues.

I've played a few R/U tron lists. It's fun to Through the Breach an emrakul. I approve.

Homebrew ALWAYS has potential for winning games. You just have to plan for things differently. R/W burn can be pretty nasty if you are able to get in and do damage. I think your hardest job will be dealing enough damage to someone before they stabilize. (T3 wurmcoil, T2 Kitchen finks, etc.) As long as you properly prepare you shouldn't have issues getting there.
Alternatevly, I know it's not a R/W deck but have you ever considered Urzatron? Either the mono U version or the G/R version are extremely well placed and you get to play with things like Wurmcoil Engine and Steel Hellkite .
