As the title states Is it possible to work well from just red and black in modern? Wanting to start in modern and have a good start of land base that supports this but have only seen Jund make use of the colors so far.
Very possible. I've seen rb goblins do well, discard decks, land destruction, vampires, you name it. Are you asking if you can win FNM or if you should take rb to a GP? Different goals, different decks.

FNM and Online dailies wherever those lie in competitiveness. Also i appreciate the primer, looks quite helpful.

I'd love to see something like that

Rb aggro can be a thing as well as Rb burn. Just try to look for those cheap efficient spells.

I've seen mono red burn with black splashed for Bump in the Night. It seems to work out well.

You may find a ton of cheap efficient beaters and attrition cards in the Rakdos cards from Dissention.
Demonfire can be quite the finisher if done right.
I wonder if anyone has tried using the Urza Lands and Mountains to make a "super huge mana amount X cost burn" deck. Or with RB for attrition value. Seems legit.
Cast Demonfire with a bunch of mana and be hellbent... win. Run Bonfire of the Damned just to be a chode. Slaughter Games MB, umadbro?

ive seen a lot of RB decks.. usually a form of 8-rack using like Blightning
RB burn splashing for Bump in the Night
or RB reanimator using Goryos vengence and Through the Breach

Would Thundermaw Hellkite or Stormbreath Dragon win the slot in this kind of deck in modern?

Stormbreath Dragon. Its Path to Exile-proof. Most of the removal in the format is burn and path and the only deck that plays Flame Slash is and
twin and even then you are guaranteed to get 4 damage in.

Yes. Modern Format Primer - Banlist Update (19/1/2015) should help you identify cards and strats
