Is the rise of Blood Moon upon us?

Modern forum

The Splinter Twin ban has left some players happy, and some sad. But the people who had U/B Twin decks have now switched to Tempo, with Blood Moon in just about every build I've seen. Who will save us from this menace? Is it even worth making a deal out of?

Hopefully this doesnt happen, but Erase is a thing too.

It's not really worth making a huge deal out of. Most of the U/R shells of Twin were already playing 3 copies main before anyways. Most of the meta had shifted to maxing harder on basic lands counts to compensate and I expect that stays the same with Blood Moon getting a tad better because of the likely surge of Tron and B/x Eldrazi.

I also think Blood Moon is going to get better with the rise in tron. But I'm mostly concerned that if it gets too big that I'll have to run enchantment removal in the mainboard just because of Blood Moon.

Crumble to Dust is the worst, I can deal with Blood Moon but I wish they never printed crumble :(

I wouldn't worry too much about needing the removal so much it's taking up slots in the main MAniACK_Magee. There's really only one or two decks that can and would play some number of Blood Moons in the main and those are Grixis Control and these U/R tempo shells popping up. I don't see either of those becoming so popular that you Blood Moons literally EVERYWHERE. Be ready to hit it out of the board if your decks needs to, but I wouldn't start dedicating maindeck specific removal for them...

Blood Moon is just proving more and more why it's my favorite card in Modern. While it does lose one of the great auto-win matchups in Bloom, Tron is certainly hurt by it. And, honestly, I don't see a reason not to run 2-3 Blood Moon and 1-2 Crumble to Dust in the sideboard of any Red deck afraid of Tron.

Slowgod - Well, if it wasn't Crumble to Dust it would've been Sowing Salt.

I hope so. Blood Moon is one of my favorites :) Remember with tron you can still push through it easily with an Oblivion Stone.

I'm definitely dusting off Skred for the upcoming PTQ season. Blood Moons and Wurmcoil Engines seem like just the place to be right now. Drazi is good, but i'll be making the proper meta call this time around.

Sure hope Blood Moon hates Eldrazi out of existence.

You know, the Moon isn't actually that great against Tron, because they can still cast their sweepers, which means that they can hit six lands on T6 and cast a Wurmy, ending the game on the spot most of the time. That's not to say that it doesn't slow them down, and that it isn't solid against other decks. But it hinders Tron much less than one might imagine.

Yeah, Sowing Salt is a tad harder to cast, especially in a deck that splashes red, like Tron for hating on itself, but mostly the same as crumble. Since Salt actually has a color I think there's 1 or 2 more ways for Tron to deal with it if they really wanted to, but seems like Ghost Quartering your own land is the best way to sort of avoid it. Not that I play super seriously anymore, but Tron has been my modern deck for awhile. I almost built a Titan Bloom at one point, sure glad I didn't do that! :P

I honestly think that WotC planning more support for URx tempo in Modern was a factor in the Twin ban. It opened up space for them to print tempo cards, like cantrips, without making Twin a monster. Blood Moon was good in Twin, and it's still going to be good in Izzet tempo, which has a similar clock against Tron, etc.. But Tron can play around Moon a bit (I haven't really looked at the Bx Eldrazi matchup yet). But Tron is still an okay matchup for tempo. Where they'll really need it is to cramp midrange's style - and that's probably their worst matchup. So yeah, I think Blood Moon is going to be a very significant force depending if URx tempo really takes off.

Blood moon is my least favorite card ever in modern, so I hope it doesn't become bigger.

Magus of the moon and fulminator mage and molten rain is where I'd like the land hate level to be at.

And eldrazi isn't going to be hurt a ton if they build their sideboard right.

I think the actual consensus on B/W Eldrazi is that the isn't worth it. 2 colors in a mostly colorless deck can be taxing to pull off. Blood Moon basically wins you the match turn 3. Even if they refuse to concede there isn't much they can do to deal with it save 1 maybe 2 All Is Dust. They don't pack Oblivion Stone and it's a lot slower when not powered by Tron lands. Black has 0 ways to deal with enchantments.

They have oblivion sower though, which helps get around the fact that they have to play fair with their lands, then they just ulamog you anyway.

As a budget infect player with a landbase of 60% basics and that new enchantment hate that came in with Gatewatch sideboarded, I'm not worried about Blood Moon :)
