Geralf's messenger is much more hasty but finks is better defensively and probably better in a vacuum.

I would agree with the Finks. Keeping yourself alive for longer can help you shoot off certain combos that may take longer.

... Geralf's Messenger also costs 3 Black mana to cast. Kitchen Finks can be put into nearly any deck in Modern.

assuming the card is cast, Geralf's Messenger seems to do more. He gets bigger with death and deals damage. Gaining life is generally worth less than dealing damage, see Heroes' Reunion , but depending on the deck, you may not be aggressive enough to need to use something like the messenger, in which case gaining life would be better. And this is all assuming the card is cast. Even in modern, having 3 black mana 100% of the time is not at all easy, but casting Kitchen Finks is no challenge whatsoever. In the right deck, where you can cast the messenger, he's awesome, but the finks are more versatile and definitely a better card in general.

Finks plus Melira, Sylvok Outcast .

Yeah. Melira pushes Kitchen Finks WAY over the top.

@cartwheelnurd: Damage to your opponent isn't as valuable as gaining life when you're playing against aggro. If you gain enough life, your opponent will begin to run dry. If you damage their face, they'll just kill you anyways.

Also, Finks enter untapped - making it infinitely better against aggro decks.

I think the best way to answer this question is that finks is played regularly in modern and sometimes legacy for a reason, but messenger is hardly seen outside of standard. If messenger was better, the pros would be using him.

As zandl has said, it comes down to mana cost and the fact Geralf's Messenger comes into play tapped. Kitchen Finks wins hands down. Hell, I'd probably take out the Geralf's Messenger s in my zombie deck and replace them with Kitchen Finks if Kitchen Finks were standard legal.
