Krenko & Alarm Combo?

Modern forum

Is it possible to Krenko, Mob Boss and Intruder Alarm to be a viable combo deck in modern?

Slayne says... #2

That's just bad Twin.

How so?

Servo_Token says... #4

No, not at all. In EDH, sure. Casual, why not. Not competitive modern though.

Need Goblin Chieftain or it's all for nothing.

Do you think it could be fringe playable (very, very fringe)?

GeeksterPlays says... #7

The idea is sound, but how you survive into turn 5/6 at the earliest to do it is another question. A lot of counter/burn maybe? Stick in Impact Tremors for the win on the turn maybe? It's not gonna be super competitive though.

It's bad twin in that it works to achieve infinite creatures that same Twin does, however it is slower. With out ramp, It combos on turn 5, and that's without any disruption. A simple Lightning Bolt foils the combo. Keep in mind that once the you have infinite creatures, you have to wait a full turn to attack with them. That is just way too slow.

Bro, don't listen to these HATAHS.

That looks like an AWESOME combo! Nice eye! :D

Since Intruder Alarm happens to be Blue... well, you know what I'm about to say here. XD

Just run counters! Worried about that little Bolt messing up your plans? Dispel it! It's PERFECT! :D

What if you added White for a Soul Sisters style early game to stall?

Runlue

we're not hating on this guy, just pointing out that this combo won't win very many games in a competitive event. It's perfectly fine if you want to play it and build around it. I'm not your dad, i'm not going to tell you what to do, but I will tell you when the idea that you think is correct is not (here, being that this combo and the deck it would go in is the slightest bit competitive).

There's a white card that taps to make tokens from innistrad block. 3 mana. Can't remember name.

June 1, 2015 4:25 p.m.

No. Fringe play fine, but competitive, this dies. You could just use something like Presence of Gond.

Yep. There you go. Almost strictly better. Good control colours too. Still worse than twin though. Can't go off at instant speed. Pestermite and Deciver exarch have flash.

(Not to mention Abrupt Decay, Inquisition of Kozilek, etc...)

You could ABSOLUTELY use this if you wanted to either A) Get an idea for a Twin deck, or B) Really want to make a Twin deck, but don't have a kajillion dollars.

I'm totally a part of the latter.

I still think this deck idea sounds awesome. But I'm a Johnny, and no one listens to Johnnies anymore. 3:

Yo you could try Forbidden Orchard + Intruder Alarm which is much stronger, but I haven't figured out a great brew for it yet.

Then you just need some way to making Forbidden Orchard a Creature. Check Zendikar. But even this is lousy and takes too long to set up.

ChiefBell says... #23

Tap Forbidden Orchard - token enters.

Response - tap Kiora's Follower to untap orchard.

Token then enters and Intruder Alarm allows yo to untap the follower.

Rinse and repeat.

Massacre Wurm - win.

Runlue:

I know, I'm a Johnny too. I think people are too concerned with competitive play to see what fun the game is.

I was just considering an Intruder Alarm deck, ft. Mass Hysteria, Fervor, or Emblem of the Warmind. Combo engines include Krenko, Mob Boss and Thraben Doomsayer. Soul sisters adds infinite life to the mix to stall if you don't have a haste ench.

Point being, there are very few combos that come close to twin in modern.

But should that keep us from playing fun combo decks like:

@ Leveler + Mirror of Fate or Laboratory Maniac + Leveler

@ Intruder Alarm combos (there are quite a few)

@ Heartless Summoning + Myr Retriever ?

Anyway, thanks to everyone to the feedback, and I get that people enjoy magic in different ways.

Depends on how you define 'viable'

Runlue says... #29

Monsmtg You can say that again.

JexInfinite says... #30

Monsmtg Runlue If you want wacky combos, EDH is a far better place for them. You can do all sorts of crazy things without the confines of certain sets, and competitiveness. As it stands, if you made those decks, they wouldn't win. If not winning, but doing weird combos is fun for you, that's fine, but modern is generally one of the more competitive formats.

Runlue says... #31

JexInfinite I find it funner to walk into a Modern tournament with a fringe deck that no one expects. Do you think anyone will sideboard for a pillow fort deck? Or some other crazy weird combo deck? Splinter Twin put its mark on the meta, so now people will be expecting stuff like THIS, but there are still really fun decks you could run, and still make it far.

I don't like EDH in that aspect simply because I'm not a fan of the "1 of everything" rule. I feel like, although it makes for more diversity in the deck, it also greatly hinders your options, in a sense.

Just my 2 cents.

I'm going to throw up my version of abusing Intruder Alarm (//) in the deck help area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
