Lets talk souls...

Okay, I am BGx player in modern, as we all know. I fully expect more and more midrange strategies to begin popping up in tournaments.

I like both Jund and Junk decks in modern, but would combining the two be a decent option?

Souls was awesome in the mirror before the DRS ban, and the addition of Ajani Vengeant made things interesting.

Whats the word? would it work in a possible new meta? ChiefBell? 8vomit?

slovakattack says... #2

What was the combination? Basically Jund, with lingering souls?

GlistenerAgent says... #3

So long as you've got four Siege Rhino, nothing can go wrong.

I think that playing Ajani Vengeant is a pretty good idea for the next couple of weeks, as he's a good attrition card in the mirror while being excellent against control decks (those probably being the most popular decks following bannings).

@slovakattack

Basically. It also had Ajani and some sideboard cards.

slovakattack says... #5

Woof. That sounds like it'd be insane with a DRS meta :P

January 21, 2015 5:03 p.m.

gnarlicide says... #6

It was insane with the DRS meta. Now the question is, will I make it a Jund-based deck or a Junk-based deck?

January 21, 2015 5:06 p.m.

GlistenerAgent says... #7

I'd base it on Abzan for now. Lingering Souls is completely nuts, much more so than Anger of the Gods.

January 21, 2015 5:12 p.m.

gnarlicide says... #8

Okay, should I try the red splash for Ajani and some bolts? or is that too ambitious?

January 21, 2015 5:14 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #9

Maybe just play Abzan with bolt and Ajani.

Goyf, Siege Rhino, Courser of Kruphix?, Bolt, Decay, Thoughtseize, Inquisition, Lingering, Ajani, Liliana,

January 21, 2015 5:26 p.m.

That sounds pretty good. Have fun never losing to an aggro deck. :)

January 21, 2015 5:27 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #11

A midrange deck with a lifegain subtheme with a strong removal package and planeswalkers providing long term attrition.

January 21, 2015 5:27 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #12

GlistenerAgent - The manabase will be brutal. Traditionally RGBW loses hard to aggro due to a difficulty stabilising and a MASSIVE dependence on fetches.

January 21, 2015 5:28 p.m.

gnarlicide says... #13

Okay, now we're talkin'. I am feeling it. Now to figure out my manabase.

this may take a while

January 21, 2015 5:29 p.m.

slovakattack says... #14

Rhino and Courser might help with that mana base.

I wouldn't play more than 2 courser, but you may want to go for 3-4 rhino.

January 21, 2015 5:30 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #15

I think the top decks will be something like -

Affinity, Zoo, Storm, Burn/RDW, BG/x, Tron, Twin, Jeskai Control, Scapeshift.

To a lesser extent I expect Merfolk, Delver, Hatebears, Azorius Control, and perhaps even Bloom Titan.

January 21, 2015 5:31 p.m.

gnarlicide says... #16

I suppose 1 copy of Blood Crypt, mountain and Stomping ground?

Fetches would be Verdant Catacombs x4, Arid Mesa, Windswept Heath?

January 21, 2015 5:31 p.m.

slovakattack says... #17

And beneath it all, the shadow of Gifts Ungiven shall linger....

muhuhuhu....

January 21, 2015 5:32 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #18

I'd go heavy emphasis on green for your fetches. GB / GR / GW?

Your creature base and at least some of your removal package all relies on G. The red stuff literally only has one red symbol. So does white.

January 21, 2015 5:35 p.m.

gnarlicide says... #19

true story. I can jump on board with that logic.

Sounds solid so far

January 21, 2015 5:49 p.m.

I imagine Storm, Zoo and Tron take a back seat for a while. They just won't have the power to compete in a wide-open format.

The fetchlands should likely be geared towards green. Definitely four Verdant Catacombs, 2-3 Wooded Foothills, 2-3 Marsh Flats, 1-2 Bloodstained Mire by my reckoning. You want GG for Courser and GBW for Rhino as well as RW for Ajani.

I'd definitely throw in some Grove of the Burnwillows if we're going 4 color. A dual land that enters untapped and doesn't hurt you will be great, and the lifegain shouldn't matter when you're bashing in with big dudes

January 21, 2015 6:07 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #23

Good call.

January 21, 2015 6:08 p.m.

gnarlicide says... #24

boom. any manlands I should think of? or is Stirring Wildwood good enough?

January 21, 2015 6:14 p.m.

Raging Ravine is probably better.

January 21, 2015 6:19 p.m.

The main issue with manlands in the current deck you are building is that they aren't fetchable at all. While you want heavy attrition, I'm not sure that I would attempt to swing it on four color midrange. I mean, maybe a one or two of.... max.

January 21, 2015 6:22 p.m.

slovakattack says... #27

I wouldn't run more than 3 manlands.

January 21, 2015 6:26 p.m.

Okay, I know the forum says no decklists, but I can't help it.

Drum roll please...

Goddamn it. nevermind. My deck is also called Red Junk. Apparently this guy keeps old standard decks on his page...

SO on my page I have a deck called red junk... check it out if you would like. I think I may have gotten a shell to work with here.

Let me know what you guys would do to make it work. If it looks too shitty just tell me that it won't work, so I can go back to Junding as usual, or junking... whichever seems fit.

here, how about this:

I am a retard and do not know how to link this.

I wouldn't run Scooze mainboard, and I would get rid of Inquisition of Kozilek (put 2 mainboard, fill out your set of Thoughtseize.)

Complete your set of bolt, and up the path count.

January 21, 2015 6:41 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #32

I think scooze is super super important to this deck but I completely disagree with the use of pte in attrition.

January 21, 2015 6:44 p.m.

slovakattack says... #33

ChiefBell: PtE is one of the few things that Rhino doesn't dodge, which is going to be extremely important in the upcoming meta.

January 21, 2015 6:46 p.m.

Jay says... #34

If you want manlands, I would definitely opt in favor of Treetop Village. It's only 1 color, but it's your most important color and it's really cheap to activate for a strong body. Also faces non-fetchability, but I think it's the best option if you want a manland.

January 21, 2015 7:11 p.m.

Path to Exile shouldn't be in your midrange deck, period. It's far too disadvantageous, and you have access to Terminate and Dismember to kill stuff.

I like the idea of the deck a lot, and was actually thinking of building it just a few days ago. The mana base was my only concern.

But I will say this, I played in a GPT maybe 9 months ago, and ''Ajundi'' came in 1st place. This was before we even had the new fetches available. So the land base could only be more solid at this point. I think its definitely a viable deck, 4 color super good stuff.
