Life From the Loam in Gifts
Modern forum

So I'm trying to get into modern, by basically just picking up card names and strategies and whatever. But for the life of me, I don't understand why Life from the Loam is good in a Gifts Ungiven control shell. So I figured I'd come to the lovely people at tapped out for an explanation.
Thanks for any answers.

Academy Ruins can be played to repeatedly remove things with Engineered Explosives, and so can Ghost Quarter, Tectonic Edge, not to mention manlands which give inevitability. The combo with Raven's Crime is the main draw to the card, however (in Modern, at least).

It's an alternate win strategy, while adding to the control elements. Who needs to actually plays Gifts Ungiven when you can wait for Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite and Unburial Rites to go into the graveyard from dredging them?

The common package I'd go for was Life from the Loam, Raven's Crime, Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, and another land. You can then force your opponent to discard their entire hand each turn, allowing you to stabilize the board. This is often the safer play than going for the Unburial Rites + big dood package.
Granted, this only works against non-aggro decks. You often board out Life from the Loam and Raven's Crime first thing against decks like Affinity or Zoo.

@ JexInfinite: You're welcome.
@ [awphutt]: Life from the Loam allows you to lock the game out with cards like Raven's Crime and Ghost Quarter.

With Raven's Crime you can lock combo decks out or at least make it very hard for them to do anything. Also it plays well with the GY strategy of Gifts Ungiven.
