Birthing Pod

awaits flogging

Slayne says... #3

Oh god, another one of these. It's just going to end as a debate between those who do and those who don't want Treasure Cruise banned. The same goes for Birthing Pod.

bijschjdbcd says... #4

If you can back up the card with evidence that the card is oppresive enough in the format then go ahead.

January 14, 2015 9:45 p.m.

xlaleclx says... #5

Cruise will almost certainly be banned. Ascendancy and dig might be banned.

January 14, 2015 9:47 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #6

Reasoning? The cards are good but looking at recent Top 8s they are beatable.

But vintage has a ban list

YES! Please don't dig too much (see what I did there?) into the Treasure Cruise argument. It's already been delved into enough... (Once again! Two puns one post? I'm on a roll). I don't want this post to ascend (ency HOLY S*** I AM GREAT AT THIS XD) into a flusterstorm (did I stretch too far? Yeah... I think I did) of anger (of the gods! Wow... I should just stop...) among the T/O members. That would get stormy (flusterstorm? Storm mechanic? Yeah... I pretty much suck)!

January 14, 2015 10:01 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #11

And a restricted list yeah? That sort of variance being catered for in a format repels me from that format.

Actually, a restricted list in modern would be interesting

bijschjdbcd says... #14

What would you restrict?

I'd restrict people.

What sort of people?

@xcn....

Smelly people.

Well ignoring all the new cards because it's too early to tell, I would probably restrict cranial plating, unban and restrict bloodbraid elf, jace the mind sculptor, sword of the meek. All strong cards as four ofs but not oppressive as one ofs. At least in my opinion. Plus if treasure cruise and ascendency get out of hand you can restrict them. As a whole I don't like banning things outright and feel as if restrictions on certain cards promote more brewing and shift decks in a positive manner

nighthawk101 says... #20

Slightly related note: During FNM last week, a few teenage boys walked in, told everyone they needed a shower, and left.

I think I go to school with one of them.

xlaleclx says... #21

"Fuck the banned list, let's all just play Vintage"Treasure cruise is 100% going to be restricted in vintage.

January 14, 2015 10:14 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #22

So the games when one person draws the singleton Jace they are adantaged expediently. Just like my problem with Powered cubes promoted extremely swingy ganes is frustrating.

Caligula says... #23

Lol, At least they were honest nighthawk101

January 14, 2015 10:15 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #24

What about swapping Ancestral Vision with T Cruise.

January 14, 2015 10:18 p.m.

julianjmoss says... #25

They are two totally different cards so I don't really see them being interchangeable

January 14, 2015 10:19 p.m.

xlaleclx says... #26

Treasure cruise is much better than vision but vision is still too powerful for modern.

January 14, 2015 10:20 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #27

They dont have to be similiar to swap, Its just if the change would actually help anything.

January 14, 2015 10:25 p.m.

julianjmoss says... #28

I would be fine with both being restricted. Cruise requires that you play certain cards like gprobe, bolts and other low cmc cards like thoughtscour in order for it to truly be good. You are effectively playing weaker individual cards because as a whole and with cruise, the sum is very strong. By restricting cruise you are taking away its major advantages to the decks that play it. It's still a great card but loses oppressiveness.

The same thing goes for visions. It's such a great tempo card and not being able to see it early on consistently makes it worse.

January 14, 2015 10:29 p.m.

I see this quickly gained popularity, and derailed. But after having read many articles, opinions, watching the GP's, and playing with and against the new archetypes created by the cards from Khans, I'm pretty sure that Treasure Cruise and Dig Through Time are safe. Cruise is a powerful tool that brought a tempo deck from tier 2 to 1, and Dig seems like a solid late game card for control and combo decks, which don't have the cantrip power they have in legacy. Jeskai Ascendancy ins't even that great of a deck, but it can break the "turn 4 rule" which we've seen in the past leads to bans. Whether or not that actually occurs is another story. WOTC might wait until the cards finally breaks before banning it.

All that being said, we've seen an extinction of Jund strategies or B/G Strategies outside of anything Abzan colored, because of the power of Siege Rhino. This leads me to believe that Bloodbraid Elf may get unbanned, but I'm not 100% on that even though I love the card. This would give some power back to not only Jund Strategies, but R/G and Zoo. Zoo would then have the option of Rhino or BBE, making deckbuilders have to think critically about what they are trying to accomplish.

Golgari Grave-Troll has been debated, and without Dread Return there is also a strong case to allow gy strategies a new tool to innovate with.

Ancestral Vision also needs to be unbanned if Cruise and Dig stay in the format.

Jace the mindsculptor will never be in modern. With no Brainstorm effects in the format, I don't think WoTC plans to give us one.

All in all I literally hope they simply unban BBE, and leave everything alone. The format would shift again as Jund/RG/Zoo decks would have a powerful advantage engine on par with the cruise.

Thank you all for reading my ramblings and musings!

January 14, 2015 10:30 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #30

See a Co structive comment whih backs up his points.

I agree with most of what you said except Bloodbraid, That card is broken.

January 14, 2015 10:33 p.m.

lemmingllama says... #31

Bloodbraid Elf should be unbanned. It is powerful, but it isn't strong enough at this point in time to deserve the ban. As long as Deathrite Shaman stays locked away, I'm happy with seeing Bloodbraid back in the picture.

Similarly, I hope Golgari Grave-Troll gets unbanned. It doesn't really break anything right now, although it fuels delve a little too well. Still, it will guarentee more variance in the meta.

Ancestral Vision should be unbanned since it gives control a way to stay in the game. Drawing into more cards is what control needs to survive in the fast meta of combo and aggro.

As for cards to ban, I'd go for Jeskai Ascendancy and Treasure Cruise.

Jeskai Ascendancy can make games go on for a long time, and can sometimes make games go to time. It also breaks the turn 4 rule, so it has some justification.

Treasure Cruise is just too efficient. It is never a dead card unless they resolve a Rest in Peace, If Preordain and Ponder are too good of a draw spell, then so is Treasure Cruise.

January 14, 2015 10:44 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #32

Jeskai Ascendancy Is pretty quick to kill when compared to Eggs.

January 14, 2015 10:48 p.m.

bigguy99 says... #33

Everything is quick to kill compared to Eggs.

Seriously though, nothing really needs to be banned if nothing gets unbanned. The meta is fairly healthy despite the general lack of BGx decks. The only things that would sort of throw things off is unbanning a bunch of stuff. BBE might be good, but who knows. It's 4 CMC in a format where you can lose on turn 3, but it does a lot for its cost. GGT is also an extremely strong dredger and even without Dread Return it would make Dredge super strong and should probably stay banned. Ancestral Vision definitely needs to stay banned, especially when TC and DTT are legal. If it is made legal, then TC needs to be banned. Modern just can't have both. The other stuff like DRS, JTMS, etc. can stay banned. That shit just makes the game no fun.

bijschjdbcd says... #34

I love how no one mentions how absent Jeskai Control is in the metagame.

January 14, 2015 11:02 p.m.

lemmingllama says... #35

@bijschjdbcd I did mention that Ancestral Vision would allow control to thrive a bit more. Jeskai control, mono blue, whatever works.

January 14, 2015 11:05 p.m.

BBE isn't Broken, Cascade is just a very value based mechanic.

If you imagine that BBE gives you a free card that costs 3 mana or less, and it may not even be worth casting. Then compare than to Siege Rhino that gives you essentially a Lightning Helix effect while being on a bigger body with trample. BBE is a more aggressive card, and fits in a different deck than the stale midrange options of Junk/Pod or nothing.

January 14, 2015 11:08 p.m.

bigguy99 says... #37

Then maybe something should be done to Rhino?

January 14, 2015 11:09 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #38

lemmingllama I meant that in the metagame no one tends to mention how dead control is at the moment. Ancestral would help this strategy which is a good thing, I like unbanning Visions and BBE to further promote some older strategy's which isnt a bad thing.

January 14, 2015 11:25 p.m.

Rhino isn't a problem, just a gooooooooood creature

January 14, 2015 11:31 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #40

Yeah I like how you can compare Rhino to a BBE that always hits a Lightning Helix.

January 14, 2015 11:38 p.m.

Caligula says... #41

Deathrite Shaman should get unbanned finally, makes sense now with the format where it's at and the addition of Treasure Cruise//Dig Through Time//Tarmogoyf

January 14, 2015 11:45 p.m.

-MisterJ- says... #42

I've been saying that DRS should be unbanned and THAT in and of itself helps deal with cruise, dig, and goyf, just like Caligula said. DRS really is the "answer" I want to see

January 14, 2015 11:59 p.m.

bijschjdbcd says... #43

I feel like this just won't happen.

January 15, 2015 12:05 a.m.

MagicalHacker says... #44

I hope they ban Storm Crow cause that card is so oppressive

January 15, 2015 12:08 a.m.

Deathrite Shaman will never be unbanned, it is oppressive. It is relevant at every turn of the game, which can't be said of other Mana Dorks or Repeatable abilities ala Grim Lavamancer. Not only does it fit into the Jund/Junk/BG/Pod shells, it completely makes gy decks unplayable as he'd be an auto include into a popular archetype that already dominates 30% or some number of the meta, aka Pod.

If you think DRS answers delve then you're crazy and don't understand the true power of the card. It's never getting unbanned. However I fully believe BBC and Visions will be unbanned.

January 15, 2015 1:07 a.m.

-Axion- says... #48

Vintage is where it's at. On I side note, I would like to see Rite of Flame restricted/ unbanned. ...but that's just wishful thinking.

January 15, 2015 1:41 a.m.

Hjaltrohir says... #49

I don't thnk Deathrite Shaman will be unbanned. DRS was what pushed Jund overt he brink from good togeat and if it were unbanned, we would see a lot of Jund decks in the format again, especially if Bloodbraid Elf gets unbanned and then we would be in the same state we were in when Jund was the top deck ad was in need of bannings.

January 15, 2015 2 a.m.

-MisterJ- says... #50

I think I understand the power of the card well enough to say it will help level the playing field against Delver decks and all of its variants.
