It's that time again folks, we've got some modern bans:

Oko, Thief of Crowns

Mox Opal

Mycosynth Lattice

All gone

Well, Oko is now officially better than Jace, the Mind Sculptor .

Honestly, I'm surprised it took so long to ban Opal. I don't think that that is remotely going to stop the Urza decks, but Opal's shenanigan enabling potential has been so high for so long, I've expected this announcement to come ages ago.

I also expected Lattice for exactly the reasons they stated. The deckbuilding requirement for the combo was so basic it didn't make any sense NOT to have the combo for a lot of decks. And it's boring as hell to top it off.

I don't really have any comments on oko. Broken card is broken.

The banning of Mox Opal saddens me. I had just got the last one I needed for my deck literally 3 days ago.

This really hurts one of my current favourite homebrew-ish decks, Factorio. Not sure it’ll be able to function at all without the Opals

Thank goodness. Now that modern actually has to compete with pioneer for players, they'll have to clean up or lose market share.

Dang, opal ban really killed my favorite pet deck Cheerios though. And no, I did not just buy 3 Okos with Christmas money...

This is absolute nonsense. I think with this banning it is safe to say that investing in any well-positioned combo deck in Modern is an extreme risk, as well as any cards that vocal members of the community are claiming are “unfun.” I am so saddened to be a Modern player right now. Banning Oko makes sense. The other two I think set a terrible precedent for future bans.

Dredge4life: I think it wasn't because opal and lattice were 'unfun' nessecarily, just the win rate? Not 100% sure, only skimmed the reason's behind the bans.

Flooremoji Opal was because people were still calling for blood on Urza. Lattice they explicitly stated was primarily for “unfun” game patterns, and casually tossed in balancing at the end.

I dropped out of Modern back when Dredge and Phoenix were so oppressive I lost faith in the format. However, I've been closely following the trends and meta since then and I personally agree with those bans - less convinced by the Opal ban but it's whatever.

Those cards don't offer any diversity to the game. They're busted and abusable and it's not interesting for the players nor the viewers to see Oko turn everything into 3/3s or Lattice just lock out a game. It basically comes down to 'Play those cards or lose to those cards'. And that sucks.

As for the people who cry because they just bought the OP cards before they get banned, take it as a learning opportunity (pro tip : if 6 decks in a Top8 play the same card just don't buy it). Big F for you lads :)

So, what are the best decks in modern after the bans?

Tron
Titan Stoneblade midrange
UW control?

I am at a loss. I have been playing a tier 3 modern deck for FNMs, but I may be looking to diversify. Mono-green Titan looks accessible and cheap to build.

Anything that helps diversify Modern is a win for me. I quit attendinding local modern events mainly bc you face 4 decks, which are all variations on a theme. Top 8 may be a bit more varied, but top 3 can be nearly identical decks. I'd rather goldfish, thanks.

Boza A friend of mine jams a budget Tron deck, and it’s plenty strong. The cool thing about Tron is that the white-bordered lands are relatively cheap, and there are a lot of budget alternatives for the payoffs, where most of the cost of the deck is. Myr Battlesphere may not be as powerful as Karn Liberated , but it’s just as scary on turn three. The deck is really sweet.
