Modern Brewing - Modern Upheaval

Hello Planeswalker,
i have a new stupid idea that probably won't work. Anyway, here's what I came up with:
8th Edition put in a lot of stupid shit in Modern, mainly Choke and Bridge. But did you ever think about Hibernation? Seem's like a bad SB card against Elves or something like that, but let's next level it. With Painter's Servant we could make all permanents green. Hibernation would turn into Upheaval.
Additionally the deck would need Reliquary Tower so we don't screw ourselfes. So we would be set with:
4x Reliquary Tower
4x Painter's Servant
4x Hibernation
Beyond that, I don't really know what to play. Maybe hard control with Spreading Seas and Choke? Maybe Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur as a finisher? Or maybe some way to finish with Laboratory Maniac?
Let me know what you think and give me all your crazy ideas!
Edit: I threw together a list:
Mean Green ... hate Machine?

yeah, it was in morning tide (or at least in that block). So I'd play Mono-U, but I don't know if bridge is good in a matchup where I'll have more than 7 cards in my hand. I guess Propaganda is better. But I like where you're going with Tutelage, it would go infinite! I guess the rest should be a control package. Maybe play Delver?

It wouldn't go infinite because Tutelage says non-land.

God damnit. Reading cards is hard. still, it combos fairly well. I may reduce the amount to two instead of 4.

I thought about that, but I would be too dependant on servant. If my opponent plays UB, it'll be a dead card until i resolve a servant with mana open. Hibernation can still be relevant because of Spectral Shift though. (Flash Freeze could be relevant too with Shift, but I think it's "meh" at best)

Choke doesn't do anything (enough) in modern, I've found with most of my testing (especially because of the lack of UWx control recently). It doesn't even hit merfolk all that hard.

ye, i figured, especially concidering I play mono-U it's a bad idea. :D
plus, making lands blue doesnt make them islands. It just makes them blue.

I'm pretty sure upheaval worked as a deck because it could float a bunch of mana with rocks etc, and then use it to replay all of the rocks and creatures to gain a huge mana and tempo advantage over the opponent. Maybe some element of that in the deck? Snapcaster Mage to do it again?

Ur gonna need some good ramp in this deck. Also, tronlands seem sweet.

@ Mortem The earliest versions of upheaval decks worked by floating a green mana and killed you by putting a mountain back on the board, then casting Wild Mongrel after playing upheaveal, with Anger in the graveyard.

joshuaizac That... probably works too.. I mean, we've got Noose Constrictor?

yea I first thought of Noose Constrictor too...but what about Anger's slot?

So you'd recommend the typical upheaval style of deck. Then I'd need a way to give my noose constrictor haste,(and maybe play Basking Rootwalla for added value. :D )

Hmm.. I think I would need to play Reckless Bushwhacker, but then I play 3 color on full-out combo. Don't know if that's really better, but I'll build a list regardless.

The Manabase still needs to be made of course.

EpicFreddi maybe a Signal Pest or two in your build?

Guardians I don't know if Signal Pest really adds anything. There shouldn't be creatures on the battlefield anyway when I swing.

Doesn't painters servent make lands green too?
As if that is the case, then you are both screwd in my humble opinion.

Yes, it would literally be upheaval but instant speed. I'd cast it end of opponents turn and then play a Reliquary Tower to be less screwed.

The problem is that modern plays with a lot of cheap stuff, and its not that much help to bounce Tarmogoyf, Liliana of the Veil, or Dark Confidant, as they will create huge value in 2 turns.
I don't see much in the way of using the tempo gained by tinkering up an Upheaval.
discarding to seven in most cases is nothing more than picking the best hand on can have - and many modern decks can win with the cards present in an ideal hand.

If this was a serious tournament deck, I'd instantly agree with you. But it's more for shit's and giggles, so I can live with that.
You gotta admit though, bounce all permanents on endstep for 3 mana isn't too bad.

Spectral shift, choke, urborg, and blood moon all seem pretty fun together. Maybe that fits in somehow?
December 23, 2016 3:09 a.m.
EpicFreddi says... #25
Choke would screw me aswell, but I like the bloodmoon idea. All nonbasic lands are -insert color you dont have- or something like that.
December 23, 2016 3:35 a.m.
Choke and urborg are a soft lock, but a largely basic deck with choke and moon could be pretty fun.

This idea is a month or so old already. I had a thread about this, I guess you didn't see it Freddi?

Sphinx's Tutelage If you want to go infinite; some Ensnaring Bridge to slow the game down, additionally maybe Cryptic Command, Serum Visions, Vapor Snag, Mana Leak is painter's servant modern legal?
