Do you guys think Blood Scrivener is playable? I see a lot of decks trying to squeeze card advantage in here and there and I feel like a 2/1 with a conditional extra card draw for 2 mana could be useful. Especially in a deck bent on expending it's hand and attacking anyway.

Am I onto something or am I on something?

I would say no because of Dark Confidant

I was trying to ignore the elephant in the room. Lets acknowledge for a moment we don't all have money falling out of our ass...but ok, fair. The deck that wants Blood Scrivener wants Bob more.

budget options are valuable too though...

I love when people just recommend the biggest money cards. DUH that's the best choice but definitely not the most feasible.

I think Blood Scrivener could have a solid spot in a Rakdos Aggro/Burn deck.

Hell, Even just spashing black in a mono-red burn would be worth the slots.

A Dimir-Control deck could see him be put to good use as well, Seeing as how you can spend cards pretty fast countering everything.

Hm. Orzhov weenies was what I was thinking. I see people trying to run Mentor of the Meek and I want him to be good...but somehow I feel like he's not.

I ran Blood Scrivener in my 8rack for a while, but it just slowly needed to become creatureless, so I don't anymore.

8Rack would be pretty good too...

I might consider that one for myself as Im running devotion as well.

MindAblaze! weenies could be good, He's probably be pretty righteous in an Extortion deck.

Blood Scrivener is no replacement for Dark Confidant . Part of that is because of how hard it is to stack multiple Blood Scrivener s, even with an active Liliana of the Veil . Dark Confidant will always draw you a card on turn three after it comes into play on turn two. Blood Scrivener may not start drawing you cards until turn four or even later.

If you're not playing Dark Confidant , the next best option is Bitterblossom . After that, I'd honestly play Night's Whisper or Sign in Blood for my black 2-drop. You really can't afford to play a vanilla 2/1 that just gets killed by Lightning Bolt . Part of what makes Dark Confidant so good is that your opponent must immediately deal with him or get 1/2/3-for-0'd. The same just isn't true of Blood Scrivener .

I like the card a lot myself, it's just a difficult card to play effectively in Modern.

Hey MindAblaze! what about trying to abuse Pain Seer .

You'd just have to figure out a way to tap it without attacking and voila!

Bob for a budget.

sylvannos makes a lot of good points. Very inconsistent for competitive forums.

Pain Seer has given me some fits. I end up running stuff like Hidden Strings and Agent of the Fates and it just gets convoluted...

I need to look at it from a new angle.
