Modern Event Deck

I'm just wondering if anyone had a chance to play the modern event deck at fnm yesterday? If so how did it perform? What changes did you make? What cards felt like they were a waste of space? Did you enjoy yourself playing it? And finally do you think it was worth the money?

I picked up a paper copy, then put together a version on MTGO as I couldn't persuade any of my friends to play modern over the weekend. My thoughts are therefore based on playing it on MTGO rather than at FNM, but the level of play is similar.

I think its a pretty solid shell of a deck, and represents pretty good value for money. The online versions of the cards cost around $90, and looking quickly at the weekend, buying the cards as singles would be (at the moment) around $200 I think. The shell of the deck is pretty simple, you get lots of creature tokens, then pump them up, I have probably a 80% win rate using it in MTGO, it loses hard game 1 vs control decks and combo decks, but comes with a well thought out sideboard.

What works well - Shrine of Loyal Legions has been a real workhorse for me, regularly allowing me to get 8-10 tokens into play in one go. I would probably add one or two more of these to the deck. Intangible Virtue is very solid as it gets the myr tokens as well as the soldiers and spirits. Zealous Persecution has saved me a number of times, its can act as an early game board clear against decks that have a lot of X/1s, while simultaneously letting you attack and put up a lot of pressure.

What doesnt work well - Elspeth, Knight-Errant as a one-of, she needs to be at least a 2 to give you a good chance of hitting her in a game, otherwise she appears so infrequently that you can't build a strategy around her. Windbrisk Heights in a deck where most of the spells are cheap, tapping the heights plus W to cast a spell that probably only cost 1+W to start with... Sword of Feast and Famine another one of that appears so infrequently you can't build a strategy around it, and even when you get it into play, its protection from black and green isnt always useful, so your just getting one of your tokens to be bigger.

Changes I would make - I probably want another Elspeth, Knight-Errant to make her actually useful, and would drop the sword for that I think. Thoughtseize is better than Inquisition of Kozilek because it can hit bigger cards, so I would make that swap too. I would swap the mana base around a bit to have fetches and maybe some scrylands.

Overall I think its a good set, its got some strong cards, and unlike most WotC premade decks it has a realistic strategy that is well defined in the "strategy supplement" and a good sideboard (with suggestions on when you would want to board in what cards). There are a couple of expensive 1-of cards in there that I think are tyring to suggest that you should get more of them, and the mana base it comes with gets people used to the idea of non-basic lands and trading life for mana, but has room for improvement. It is a solid base to build on, that can do ok at FNM as it is, and makes a good way for people to get into modern or start a new modern deck.

I agree with a lot of what KnightFire said. I made some changes to mine before playing, Modern Event Deck Ideas is a pretty close representation. I went 2-1 with it, and was very happy, although I didn't play against anyone with a high tier deck. I lost to a mono-red burn deck that beat my tokens as fast as I pumped them out.

I ran 4x Thoughtseize AND 2x Inquisition of Kozilek , added Elspeth, Sun's Champion and rearranged the mana base a little. Windbrisk Heights is either the most awesome card in the game, or the biggest let down. The land they give you seems a little funky. Godless Shrine is a great add, I need to pick up a few more.

I never gave Shrine of Loyal Legions a chance...but I'm thinking I should. I did play against a blue black deck and a green black deck, so Sword of Feast and Famine did get use. I have another one, I'm considering putting them both in, at least in sideboard.

Was it worth $75? For me, yes. I've never played Modern without a barely-modified standard deck, so this was my first real encounter. I had a blast. I've also never ran a true token deck, and I really enjoyed that aspect. I think it has value, the cards don't seem to have taken a huge hit online, I don't think you could build this deck from scratch for $75...the only down-side was the fact the card sleeves disintegrated while I was sleeving the deck. I bought new sleeves before leaving the LGS. The "deck box" is ok.

Favorite things: Zealous Persecution , Intangible Virtue , playing Elspeth, Sun's Champion with Windbrisk Heights on turn 4.

Least favorites: Sleeves that should have just been left out, Windbrisk Heights turning over Soul Warden as the best option, and the weird looks I got for playing with the deck. Net-deckers seemed to think I was a WotC sheep and casual players thought I was Mr. Money-bags.

Here's the changes i've made Budget Bw Tokens. I haven't really played it against friends yet. But i saw an article on bw tokens and the shrine was used so i'm going to give it a chance for at least awhile. I agree with both you guys on Windbrisk Heights . Most of the time it feels so wasted too me.

Sorry about your sleeves. Mine have been holding up fine. It does seem like they are a hit or miss.

I'm just glad people are having good experiences with the deck, because everyone ripped it apart when it was spoiled, and I always felt it was much better than people were giving it credit for.

Hey nice deck! Sundering Growth isn't too bad a sideboard card for budget! I might have to steal that idea....One of the other people who I know bought the deck runs it with 4x Duress and 2x Inquisition of Kozilek . We had similar experiences and I run with 4x Thoughtseize (Theros was the best drafting I've ever done. 6x Thoughtseize across 4 drafts and a pre-release or I wouldn't have single of it.)

I'm debating if Swords to Plowshares is better in this deck than Path to Exile . I don't find my land too hard to come up with, and I'd rather give an opponent life than land...

latest version carig wescoe used at pt bng TBF, I share this because of the use of Thoughtseize Though to share on Windbrisk Heights what you do with it is stuff a buff spell, like Honor of the Pure or what not under it and play it after defenders are declared to mess up the combat math and kill off a few of your opponents creatures. In a most incarnations, elspeth is 2-3 of or extinct.

veritates1 depending on how you plan to use this, Swords to Plowshares is not modern legal. FWIW, in Legacy where both stp and pte are legal, people use stp over pte every damn time.

A fun change to this is to add Polymorph and remove all the creatures and add an eldrazi, like Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and polymorph a token into him. It's not consistent but fun.

I saw alot of people running Disenchant in the sideboard, and then in one article they mentioned that Sundering Growth is a strictly better option. I need to try to get a hold of Thoughtseize , but I think in creature heavy decks i may just sideboard in Despise for Duress .

gufymike thanks for explaining that in a rational, constructive, polite way. You're a credit to the community. However the ITC (Internet Troll Collective) has designated you as an undesirable. Usage of the word "the" shall henceforth be replaced by swears in your posts.

And Polymorph sounds hilarious.

I've been modifying my event deck as I go and updating it on here. It's on my profile, if I wasn't on my phone at work I'd post the link.

There are a few directions you can take this deck.
