Modern Meta and sideboard

Modern forum

Im just now starting to get a full grip on this game and want to dive deep into the modern game type. However the modern meta and sideboarding strategies are vastly different from standard.

What are some cards out there that can help me build a better side board and how can i know how to react to such a large meta-game?

Look at the top decks and put in your sideboard what would go well against said decks until you figure out what you will normally be playing against.
The top decks (i believe are):
affinity
pod
tron
twin
Living End and other graveyard strategies
Knowing that in mind, some good cards are
Rakdos Charm
Rest in Piece
Damping Matrix
Stony Silence
Relic of Progenitus
Pithing Needle
Thalia, Guardian of Thraben

I hope that helps!

Rakdos Charm is a REALLY sweet sideboard card, because you can bring it in against pretty much every top deck in the format. Each mode is always VERY powerful in a lot of matchups. If you are playing a RB(x) deck, I'd strongly suggest 2-3 in your board.

Honestly, Rakdos Charm has become less potent in Modern. While graveyard decks have become more prominent, you'd still rather be playing Grafdigger's Cage or Relic of Progenitus because they are much more versatile. There is much stronger Affinity hate available, such as Ancient Grudge , so Rakdos Charm is less powerful and more color-intensive there. Finally, the last mode was supposed to be awesome against Splinter Twin , but now most Twin decks don't have to combo to kill you. I'd still play 1 or 2, but by no means is it as potent as everyone seems to think.

The most common decks right now are Affinity, Birthing Pod , Splinter Twin variants, UWR Control, Tron and various sorts of other combo decks. All kinds of artifact hate work (Shatterstorm , Creeping Corrosion , Stony Silence , etc.), while boarding in Torpor Orb for Pod and Twin can work wonders. Spellskite is an incredibly potent card, especially if you have creatures you want to protect. All in all, you want your sideboard to be versatile and as powerful at hating on multiple different decks as possible.

Well I think that Pithing Needle and Surgical Extraction are pretty legit.

I personally prefer Extirpate to Surgical Extraction . The split second mechanic is amazing, and more valuable in most instances than being able to pay life instead of B.
