Modern not-so expensive Staples

Modern forum

So... Want to play modern, I have some Standard good cards and nice deck ideas to do. In standard I know what I am doing and what I'll do.

But, of course, standard will rotate, I plan to build my standard decks now, and, when they rotate out, build modern ones based on then, what I won't use on the new version, go to casual.

Most of my decks are control (Only a Monsters that I'm thinking on do Naya or RUG after JOU, is Midrange). And I want to know modern control staples that aren't fetches.

I have Stomping Ground and Thoughtseize , lots of temples too, but, I don't think tapped lands will do much in modern.

Could you guys help me to do a list that includes most important staples (and miscelaneous good cards) to start on modern? Like, Remand , Cryptic Command , Snapcaster Mage s, shocks and what priority should I take?

Thankfully, Eduardogbg

I would get cantrips first, and cards that are generally around $5.

Play a more casual modern deck with Shocklands, Check Lands, Filter Lands, and Speed Lands. You can avoid fetches until you're ready to actually drop $700 on your deck.

You can still play just fine without fetches, but just understand that fetches are more competitive and will have a more consistent mana base than you. They will mulligan less often and likely be able to play the cards in their hand all of the time. Mana will not be an issue to them. Try to have Tectonic Edges. Get all the cheaper cards first like mana leaks etc and use cards that aren't quite as good, but similar to the idea of cards that are really good. For example, you don't necessarily need Cryptic Command. While it's nice, you could use Gideon Jura instead. It's not going to counter spells and draw cards, but it can tap down their creatures so that you can blow them out with Sunblast Angel . Even though you'll have a slightly different and slower strategy, it's all just an entry point. You don't have to be able to beat Melira Pod or Affinity when you're new to modern. Take your time and try not to drop your life-savings into it all at once. :)

Try out this is of modern staples. It might be a bit outdated, but will still give a general idea of what to get/expect.

Thank you two... I'll check the list, and of course, try to substitute many cards as possible... I can't forgive myself for loosing Scavenging Ooze free D14 promo... Every time I see the price or see it being used on a championship, is like, laugh to don't cry.

Oh, nice to know Goblin Electromancer have use in modern, the owner of my LGS have a foil Thrun, the Last Troll and a foil Goblin Electromancer . Probably I can talk with him and buy then for a low price, since they're used a little and, and fit my in decks...

But I'm actually really considering 3 Snapcaster Mage s and one Vendilion Clique . I play casual modern with certain frequence and have money, I'm going to half-competitive decks. What do you think?

That is a lot of money that you are spending for four cards. But that is the price of playing modern. If you are buying snappy's/cliques, then you might as well make Splinter Twin ... If you want to try something casual, i then suggest making some mono blue Delver of Secrets  Flip variant.

But, I'm asking for staples just because of that, Standard rotate and your metagame-deck for FNM is just a cute thing to place in your deck box, Modern gimmicks would be money wasted on only one deck.

Now, staples, are 4 cards that you can use in 3 or even 4 decks! I almost bought Abrupt Decay for my BUG superfriends project, but I noticed that I could only use it in Jund and BUG (B/G decks that I would like to play if I had too), now Hero's Downfall could be used on MBD, Dimir, Esper, BUG, Jund...

Of course my wallet will cry, but in future she's going to thank me.

Yeah, Delver of Secrets  Flip is very well used in lots of decks and is cheap. I'll be a good aquisition. Thanks for the suggestion.

Any speculation of future staples?

I know that the rumor is that fetchlands will get a reprint. If that is so and you believe that wizards is, then don't buy them yet. the filter lands / fast lands / check lands are great substitutes until the fetchlands are reprinted and maybe lowered prices.

Abrupt Decay
Shocklands
Blood Moon
Chalice of the Void (maybe)
Craterhoof Behemoth (or is it jumping up in price because of legacy elves/edh?)
Ensnaring Bridge
Gifts Ungiven
Griselbrand (i am really hoping on this one)
Eldrazi Titans
Magus of the Moon
Inquisition of Kozilek
Path to Exile
Remand
Spell Snare
Thoughtseize

Is a short list of some staples and cards that are used commonly in modern.

Droxium I'm pretty sure Craterhoof Behemoth 's price is rising because of Legacy Elves, and not to mention he is a mythic in a not-so-heavily opened set. That being said, he does very nice work in Modern Elves which i'm planning on running as well :P

@Dalektable, bah. Anyways, i just took cards that were modern staples on my want list in my binder (talk about laziness:). Also, why did Avacyn, Angel of Hope jump up in price? I remember getting her for $10.50 at a card shop...

Also, anything from the tron decks:
Karn Liberated
Wurmcoil Engine
All Is Dust
Oblivion Stone

And whatever else it might have that i don't remember.

Droxium Hm, that's interesting. Perhaps she has began seeing some play in Legacy? I know she is fairly good in EDH, but that's no reason for a fifteen dollar price spike. Looking at the how the price have changed, she nearly doubled ion price in the span of a few days at the end of january. My guess would be some deck did well in a tournament with her as a center piece and a bunch of people jumped on the bandwagon.

God, I hope Tron staples don't rise in price I already want to run that deck and it's damn expensive (for me) as is.

You know that without modern, you could've gotten a Karn Liberated for ~$15 !!! Anyways, unless they print something that makes tron ridiculous, i doubt that those staples will rise in price. That being said, i don't want to have the eldrazi though they might thanks to 12 post legacy :( i just want to make an Azusa, Lost but Seeking edh deck and thank god i got her at $10...
