Modern Playable

What is the easiest way to find out if a card sees a reasonable amount of play in the modern format. I am a standard player only right now but I hope to grow into modern as I acquire more cards as I keep playing Magic.
Right now I am thinking of buying some expensive cards for my decks and knowing that one day they could work in a future modern deck will go a long way to justify their price tags.
Im thinking of :
I have read articles that have suggested all are modern playable, but I have also read articles that say they are not. Apparently Monastery Mentor could not find a place against better 3 drops and in better colours. etc
So whats the best way to get a pulse on the modern format

Atarka's Command sees play in burn, and the rest are pretty useless. Burn isn't a terribly expensive deck if you have the fetches, and it's a great introduction to the format which will certainly not limit you when you become better at the format.
I have no idea what articles say that they are all modern playable, because only Atarka's Command sees play. There are some decks that run Mentor, but they suck, and some Zoo variants run DromoCommand, but it's not a staple option.

Of those cards, the only one that is really modern playable is Atarka's Command. Modern is a super aggressive format, and its hard for anything with converted mana cost of 4 or more are almost unplayable. If a card has a CMC of more 4 needs to either win you the game that turn or give you some serious advantage.

Atarka's Command is pretty much a staple in burn decks at this point. Dromoka's Command - as the other guys pointe out - is not good enough to warrant a mainboard slot. It's run as a 1/2-of in some sideboards.
All creatures you mentioned have seen play in Modern but are currently not amongst any top tier strategies. However Monastery Mentor sees much more play in Legacy, so he indeed has eternal value.

Atarka's command see's heavy play.
Dromoka's command see's a tiny bit of fringe play.
Whisperwood elemental doesn't really see any modern play but it sees a bit of play in some legacy nic fit lists so will hold some value down the line.
Thunderbreak regent is bad in anything other than standard
Mentor sees no modern play but it's objectively the best creature in vintage and sees a reasonable amount of legacy play so it will hold value as well.

Monetary mentor would be great in a modern variation of Esper. I have seen it done with good results. You would need 4 Snapcaster Mage and a few shocks and maybe a cryptic command or two. But the rest of the deck is pretty easy to find. Like 2x tasigurs and the fetches. 4x deltas and 4x strands, respectively. As a matter of fact, I had it built for a while before I sold snaps. So if you need anything, let me know and I can look.

MTGgoldfish and MTGtop8 list the top decks in the format.
None of the creatures you listed are T1 playable.
Dromoka's command isn't good enough to be a mainboard card.
