Modern Staples Checklist

Modern forum

So, I just had this idea: a sort of checklist of qualities that would allow you to check whether or not a new card is likely to be Modern playable. This is what I have so far:

Does it generate card advantage? If so, how much?

Does it cost 4 or less mana?

Does it let you reuse cards or interact with the graveyard? (Snapcaster Mage, Tarmogoyf

Is it the best version of it that is legal?

Does it fit into a pre-existing deck(s)?

Does it do well against pre-existing deck(s)?

Is it hard to deal with?

If you think the idea is good, i would love to hear your input!

Playability is almost entirely a case-by-case basis. Most things are either obviously unplayable or powerful in their own (significantly different) way.

It's not a bad idea but a lot of cards have to be considered case-by-case, and by looking at where they fit, instead of just what they do in a general sense.

I mean you have obviously powerful cards in terms of efficiency (goyf) or card advantage (snappy). But then you have a whole host of cards that just aren't as good and don't tick a lot of boxes and you have to kind of make arbitrary judgments.

Vampire Bats is the only good card ever.

Does it die to doom blade? Tarmogoyf does, therefore, Tarmogoyf sucks. It's an overhyped piece of trash that dies to every removal in the format. What a waste of cardboard.

I have an idea, why does no one run Reality Shift? It's cheap 2-drop removal at instant speed. Yes your opponent gets to manifest a card, but that could help you out too. You could have them manifest a powerful noncreature spell! Just a thought.

You all have good thoughts, and of course the checklist would not be a replacement for reason and common sense. It is really more of a tool in deciding among cards you aren't sure about.

Jesus Christ, all of you guys are attacking an idea! A good one, at that! Just because you can see something mean doesn't mean you should.

This is like the big issue with this forums; everybody who has a new idea that could be very helpful is just immediately shut down by negative people, partially because they're the only one who says anything.

If you are actually a bitterhearted person and can only complain about ideas, concepts, and new things about Magic, please go to Reddit. There are a lot more intense people there and maybe you'll learn to be more constructive.

This isn't a comment trying to intentionally harm or disrespect a person's character, since Magic players usually are extremely nice in my experience, so please don't take offense. But chill out on the hate!

But anyways, about the Goyf... I admit that the near $200 price tag may suck, but it's nowhere near a sucky card by any means. It absolutely FORCES your opponent to play reactively, as for 2 mana it is (one of) the fastest clocks there is. Best case scenario, they trade a path for it,and even in the case of the "dies to doom blade" comment... Sure, but someone on the play in a game dropping a turn 2 goyf, is getting board presence. Reactively doom blading the Goyf on the next turn (or holding in response to attack) is essentially making that player lose their second turn, in the meanwhile, the goyf has already done it's job as a pseudo time walk and they are now onto turn 3 where they could give a crap less about the goyf they lost because they'll be too busy dropping a Liliana of the Veil or Knight of the Reliquary or any number of great 3 drops. Also note that if someone wasted turn 2 doom blading a creature, they no longer are holding and mana for a spell pierce, remand, mana leak, etc. Do you still think it's a bad card?
