Modern with No Banlist

Hey guys,

In response to the "prevalence" and "format-warping" power of Treasure Cruise, there have been a few ideas as solutions to the "problem". One of these was to unban things, like Bloodbraid Elf or even Deathrite Shaman as a way to even the power level.

This led me to thinking: what if the banlist was removed? This would lead to some extremely powerful cards like Stoneforge Mystic, Skullclamp, Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Dark Depths to be legal. What do you guys think the meta would be? Would it be healthy or completely oppressive?

Well, the banlist is there for a reason. If everything was unbanned, all tier 2 decks and below would become completely unplayable, and we would only see play with these cards and some supporting ones that help finish off games. I currently enjoy the modern meta, and it would be completely shattered with the banlist being removed.

lemmingllama I agree that it shouldn't be removed, this was more of a hypothetical scenario in which it was removed and I wanted to see what the users of Tappedout thought the meta would look like.

I feel like any legacy decks that fit the modern time constraint would easily take over

I would say this:

Inb4 U/W Stoneblade crushes Modern.

I'd personally play manaless dredge for days, but yeah, stoneforge delver decks would wreck the format.

This is a bit of a stupid question. We assume the banlist exists for a reason. Therefore asking whether a meta without the banlist would be healthy is to miss the point that the banlist exists to keep it that way (healthy).

fluffybunnypants It would wreck the current Modern, but so would Dark Depths. I wonder whether all the powerful decks that come out would counteract each other and make a decently competitive meta. Elves could be competitive, you would even see Turn 1 Goblin Charbelcher decks.

@ tman007 Without cards like Crop Rotation, Exploration, The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale or Maze of Ith or even Mox Diamond being available in Modern, the Dark Depths strategy becomes less stable. I mean you could still turn three with Depths, Vampire Hexmage and two black sources, but it's not like it'd be as brutal as say Jund Depths in Legacy. It would end up being a B/G Lili/Loam strategy probably.

I'd pay to see Elves viable in Modern but it'd lose a lot of punch without Gaea's Cradle, Birchlore Rangers, Wirewood Symbiote and Quirion Ranger. That deck is great and I frequently wish I had the patience to play it in Legacy.

I'd actually be horribly concerned about Miracles, U/x/x Delver and U/W Stoneblade being super oppressive.

Don't forget that mind-numbingly slow games would return with both Eggs and Sensei's Divining Top being playable.

Eggs is still a thing right now, granted it's more of a fringe strategy, but it it still here. Top, while it would extend some games, makes modern Counter Top a thing. I wouldn't mind Miracles being good in Modern for once.

Sorry i don't html

This is an interesting article about the issue. It says Thopter Depths, Hypergenesis and elves would be the big three. Worth a quick read.

I want to build CawBlade with Jitte and Clamp available to me. Damn.

Hypergenesis would be the best deck, hands down. It kills turn one, consistently.

It would be a less powerful, but equally stupid version of legacy, because Mental Misstep would be legal.
