This card is beast it locks stuff down on the first drop then the second one it becomes hopeless. It's fairly cheap to run only at 3 cmc and prolly the only meta threat to be able to get under it is slaughter pact

It's hella in Scapeshift. The main reason to play it is for the Khans mode.

Must decks just kill you without targeting your stuff. It's a 3 mana card, that doesn't really do that much....
March 28, 2015 4:47 p.m.
I actually really like the card in a vacuum, but the format just doesn't allow it to be played. You're sinking three mana into something that's just not worth three mana. I could see it in some midrange-y build for either ability, but it would still be not enough because there are ways to get around it. I'm still hoping for someone to break it.

Death taxes comes to mind N scapeshift also sounds pretty beast

Scapeshift. It's good in Scapeshift. Seriously. It's also rather (read: very) good in UR Twin.
I've seen reanimator use it to discard their fatty to reanimate, which I thought was rather clever.

Death and Taxes is usually mono-white (in Legacy) and the closest deck to it in Modern is probably Hatebears, which is WG, but I've seen a few sorta weird UW lists floating around. It's a much different deck that doesn't actually really need Monastery Siege.

Horrible idea in mid range we re thinking more of a lock down control style....

UW could actually use some of this meta. Usually it happens on UW match ups where aggro or mid range swarm the board and that's usually game for control players but with a card that could slow down a swarm or completely lock it down it should be a fair add to the control style for control players I'm surprised no one has hyped this card since its release. Everyone always so busy talking mainstream

GlistenerAgent oh yeah lol I forgot that you have two modes on that pretty neat find :)

How does Siege slow down a creature deck? It's good against Burn, but not actual creatures.
Again, you play it for the Khans mode.

But control doesn't need it. Take UWR control, for example - Khans isn't horrible, but it isn't that great in that you don't want to be discarding your stuff. The deck is supposed to always have a hand full of good stuff that'll answer anything and getting rid of it doesn't help. The Dragons part of it is just awful. The reason I suggested it for midrange decks is because it offers protection for the threats and helps the deck actually get to the threats.

So it's a pretty neat find that I read the other half of a card?

Damn I thought it locked everything in well that kinda ruins it

@bigguy99 I'll point out that looting lets you build a hard-to-beat hand and discarding can help fuel Snapcaster Mages. It's card quality, not card advantage that you're going for. Desolate Lighthouse is very good.

No just the fact that u were able to put two n two together. I made a bunch of reanimators decks and not once did I think bout using it like that thank u

I use it in sideboard in my fringe legacy deck "Tipping the scale". Its pretty good against burn and my friends 8-rack deck :)

GlistenerAgent I meant that there can be times you really don't want to discard things. It's good when all of your cards are good, and I've found there to be a lot of situations where the case is that your hand is full of answers to threats and they're all relevant. I've toyed around with the card and it never worked too well.

Plus u have to pay desolate light house every turn so there's that, but sometimes it does fall in right timing

Okay, it could be good in Scapeshift, since the deck mostly wants to stall the opponent, until they get mana. And it's good against burn.
Besides that... Twin don't want it. They want to play their combo T3, or they want to counter whatever the opponent has.
And it doesn't do anything against Affinity, Tron, Junk, Twin, BloomTitan, Infect etc....
All in all, it could be a card in the SB against burn, and maybe MB in Scapeshift. And that is it...

In Twin, you're not trying to combo on turn 3. You do that in some matchups, but not always. If you need to counter something, you hold the Siege and cast it when it's convenient.
Play with the card. The card quality it affords you is really, really good.

In Twin, you're going to combo off once you have the ability to protect your combo. You don't slam a Splinter Twin on T4 into a Slaughter Pact.

Yeah or terminate. Probe they re hands make sure it's clear by turn 5, something like that

Glad I stumbled upon this thread. Monastery Siege's home in Modern is my deck of choice right now, Merfolk. Us 'folk players have been putting a few copies mainboard or in the side, usually 2 no matter what board it goes in to. It has been a solid replacement for Kira. It is a house in the Burn match up, good in the G/B/x matchup to ruin discard and hurt their best card against our deck, Abrupt Decay.
Merfolk seems to be the deck best suited to use it since you can still get creatures on the board with AEther Vial after tapping out turn 3 to play it. It is easier to cast than Kira, Great Glass-Spinner, and as previously stated, is a better way to deal with Abrupt Decay.

In what deck? As a general card, it's pretty trash, but I run it in my blue tron sideboard for the burn matchup, and it does ok there.
