Mono Blue Tron

Modern forum

Hey everyone! Me again, once again pondering the viability of a modern archetype. So recently I've been testing with Mono Blue Tron, which I must say is a blast to play. Against combo decks and control decks, Tron has been beating them up ruthlessly. However, It has an abysmal match up versus anything aggro. I have been working on a solution but haven't really found anything great to answer it. So what do you all think, is Mono Blue Tron viable in this current metagame? Furthermore, if anyone has any advice on how to play certain match ups or general playstyle advice I'd love to hear your thoughts / experiences.

U Tron is always less viable than RG Tron.

That's cool, that also wasn't is my question. RG Tron is a different deck entirely and a glass cannon, which i hate. Not to mention miles more expensive.

I 've heard that Platinum Angel (which is probably in the deck already) stops aggro in its tracks as long as you have counterspell backup. Wurmcoil Engine (again, probably in the deck) has lifelink, and that helps too. In the sideboard, Bottle Gnomes is nice to have.

Going back to Platinum Angel, I remember that some guy on CFB made a list that ran 3 and revolved around protecting one. This could be an interesting direction to try, as you literally cannot lose with an Angel and some counterspells.

And to answer the guy who claimed that RG Tron is always better, you're wrong. It has the same problems as U Tron, but has to rely on drawing Pyroclasm to even have a chance against aggro. It also desperately needs Tron on turn 3, and U Tron doesn't. Not to mention, the deck is terrified of land destruction. U Tron can just counter it, but RG is so scared of Sowing Salt that it has to run Ghost Quarter just to blow up ITS OWN LAND in response. Like Dalektable said, it's a glass cannon.

Your assessment of RG Tron is completely wrong, Ghost Quarter isn't necessarily there for the Sowing Salt. Hardly anyone plays that card anyway.

Against Aggro it also has on average 2-3 W Engines which are almost always lights out against a majority of the aggro decks.

It now has Ugin, Which is nuts against Aggro.

Yes it requires Tron to be good, But it is built in a way to get there.

And also, Both Tron have bad match ups but GR has less.

Not sure why everyone wants to say one is better... they are completely different. RG is basically combo. U-tron is control. Both top 8 regularly.

To answer your original question- Bottle Gnomes AEtherize and Cyclonic Rift can help.

Yeah but RG tron is in professional modern tournaments more viable. Its the better option. The only reason people play blue instead is in a combo heavy meta (not common) and for the budget.

I have been playing U Tron avidly over the last year or so and couldn't agree more with you, saying it is a blast to play. You are correct when you say pure aggro decks can be an issue, notably affinity, zoo and burn, however there's an array of cards which help these matchups. In a recent PPTQ I decided to mainboard a Platinum Emperion as I expected a hell load of Twin and Burn, which thankfully I saw. My version of U Tron is designed in a way in which I counter until I can tutor up or play a bomb - emphasis on the tutoring. As a result in 3 of the 4 games I played against burn over the course of the day I was able to drop an emperion turn 3/4, making it near impossible for me to lose. Sadly this adaptation makes our infect game slightly weaker; it's a metacall. Aside from that I play 2 mainboard spellburst as when on the play the card is strong and when tron is online it nearly always means we win. Also played is 2 mainboard spell snare for the ever-prominent goyf. I'd test and consider these adaptations. Here is my list if you want to look and please ask any questions you may have.

scottemery Hey, thanks for the info! Platinum Emperion seems super sweet, if you don't mind would you please take a look at my current list? I'd like to be able to fit Emperion in to test, it seems great. Whether in the SB or mainboard, I'd love if you could help me out. Robotic Control

A lot of the ajustment will boil down to a meta call, depending on which aggro decks you run into more frquently. My solutions so far: I run two Ugins. If he hits the board its usually GG against any aggro deck other than infect and affinity. I side him out vs affinity actually. Wurmcoils are important to have at least two-of in any aggro match. Tokens aggro gets hosed by a lot of sideboard tech: Echoing Truth or Ratchet Bomb are just cruel. Echoing truth also buys you a turn vs a splinter twin combo, so there's that. I've dropped chalice of the void for 1, that hurts a lot of aggro decks, including bogles, which is another tough matchup. And speaking of bogles, spellskite hoses that too.

But the quintessential thing has already been said. Against any aggro, dig for, and drop a platinum angel as fast as possible, then protect it until you can blow their board up with o-stone or ugin, or mindslaver lock them.
